Meet Tammy Bae of Gloss Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Bae.

Hi Tammy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
If you asked me 10 years ago what my life plan was, I would have replied “working in retail pharmacy.” I was trying to fulfill my parents dream of attending college and having a doctorate degree. As we all know, life doesn’t always go as planned for all of us.  I decided to choose a different career path when pharmacy school didn’t work out.  I got so burnt out working at the pharmacy, I decided to go manage my brother’s nail salon back home in Dodge City.  I had never ever imagined myself being in the beauty industry, but I found myself so much happier connecting with other people.   I fell in love with what I was doing and I knew that I could do much more. Once I got my nail license, I decided to get my esthetics license as well so I could learn more.  During esthetics school, I fell in love with lashes and I knew that this was the right path for me. While going to school, I worked at a nail salon and  I knew that I wanted more for myself. I wanted a place of my own. I wanted an uplifting workplace with the diversity of all artists. And eventually, Gloss Spa was born!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening a brand new business is never easy. There are always struggles. Big or small. Especially in this industry where salons are so saturated. How was I going to be different from any other salon? What was I going to offer that others didn’t? I had no idea! Every thought I had, someone had already beat me to it.

I hesitated for a long time to open up my business, but luckily my support system encouraged me. My husband and I scraped together everything we had and decided to take all the leap. The hardest part was just getting started and finding our footing that first year. Finding employees was difficult. It was hard to persuade someone to work at a brand new business.

There was definitely sweat and tears in building a brand new business! But fast forward a few years later, I’ve managed to find the best team to work with, and has made every obstacle worth it!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Gloss Spa?
Gloss Spa is a nail salon. We have 9 nail artists including myself. I also offer lash extensions, brow wax, lash lift, and tint, and I just added brow lamination to the menu.  The strip lash look is my specialty because there are so many ways to create that look. It doesn’t always have to be full and dramatic!

What sets us apart? That’s a hard one because I feel like there are so many amazing salons and so many talented artists! I really think it’s how you treat others. I think kindness attracts kindness! One thing that we take pride in is our customer service and quality work! We truly value our clients and we do our best to provide the best experience from start to finish!

I am most proud of my team. Not only for their creativity and quality work but also because we have created a family vibe setting where everyone that walks in feels welcomed and cared for!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I also love to teach! I remember as a kid always playing “teacher” and quite frankly, I’m surprised I didn’t become one! I hope to bring nail/lash classes to Gloss Spa in the future!
