Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Brown.
Spencer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After graduating college for musical theatre in New York City, I moved back to Kansas City and immediately started working at the box office for a theatre company and simultaneously working as a server/performer at a cabaret bar downtown called Bar Natasha. The owners wanted to produce a live-singing drag show and thus my persona, Daisy Buckët (pronounced “bouquet”) was born. Since then, I’ve also joined the a cappella drag troupe, The Kinsey Sicks (Dragapella®), and will celebrate performing full-time as a drag performer for 20 years next summer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A career in show business is NEVER a smooth road, try as you might. A lot of the struggles stem from working with various venues, contractors. There are plenty of people who know what they’re doing, but there are a lot of people who don’t. I try to help out and bring my strengths to the table whenever I’m hired for an event, not just as a performer. All the behind-the-scenes stuff in order to get a show up and running prove to be the bigger challenges. One of the constant struggles is negotiating what you should be compensated for your work. Fortunately, I’ve learned a lot over the years to pave the way for a smoother road and to not shy away from knowing your worth.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known mostly for being Kansas City’s live-singing drag artist but my specialty is curating special theatrical shows and cabaret productions. I’m most proud of my ten-year run producing a drag production of “Hocus Pocus” which sold out at The Folly Theater, which, to my knowledge, is the first ever sold-out run of a drag performance in that historic space. I’ve also got two award-winning (The Pitch Magazine) albums out, “Pansy” (2018) and “Welcome to Springfield” (2023) both recorded in Kansas City with some of our finest musicians. My constant creative ability to adapt to the current environment and to be able to be ready, witty, and quippy on a mic are certainly some of the assets that set me apart from my peers. I excel at hosting a show, interacting with an audience, and singing.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
If we’re tying it to how I got to where I am today, I’d say performing in my 5th grade talent show in drag while singing the song “Some People” from the musical ‘Gypsy’. I was the final act of a 3 hour talent show in an un-air conditioned gymnasium and got a rousing standing ovation by my school. If that wasn’t the glimpse into my future, I don’t know what else could be.
