Meet Skylor Alexander of Blue Heron Pools & Outdoor Living

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylor Alexander.

Hi Skylor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Blue Heron Pools & Outdoor Living started with two things: a lifelong love of water and the outdoors, along with a belief that your backyard is an extension of your home weather you are building a pool, a deck, or an outdoor living space with us, it should have the same care and design as the inside of your home.

For founder Skylor Alexander, water and being outside has always been where life slows down. It’s where families gather and the best memories are made. He also saw homeowners investing serious money in their backyards and getting a stressful, disorganized process in return that did not add value to homes like it should. Blue Heron was founded to change that.

Skylor grew up in construction and has built multiple businesses as a serial entrepreneur. He is a Class A Licensed General Contractor, which is the highest licensing a contractor can get. He truly understands construction.

Blue Heron launched in 2025 to combine that discipline with his passion for water. The company builds fiberglass pools, decks and complete outdoor living spaces across the Kansas City metro. Every project runs on proven systems, so clients always know where their build stands.

The philosophy is simple: “We build exceptional pools and deliver the experience to match.” Built for Beauty. Built for You.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road worth taking is perfectly smooth, and Blue Heron’s has been no exception.

Building a new company meant creating everything from scratch: systems, trade partnerships, and a reputation. Finding partners who share the same standard for quality took time. Kansas City’s weather adds another challenge, with rain delays and storms, but where we really shine is we have the capability to build even through winter. Last year we had that really bad 2 week deep snow storm and we were digging a pool and prepping to set it after the storm passed, so homeowners can enjoy their new pools, decks and outdoor spaces the second the nice weather hits. Blue Heron learned early that homeowners can handle a delay, but not silence, so when we are in those unpredictable times for weather, we plan out and communicate.

As a serial entrepreneur, Skylor learned the hard way that growth and health aren’t the same thing. Blue Heron was built to grow on purpose, not by accident. “Every contractor makes mistakes,” he says. “The ones worth hiring own them, fix them, and get better.”

As you know, we’re big fans of Blue Heron Pools & Outdoor Living. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Blue Heron Pools & Outdoor Living designs and builds luxury pools and complete outdoor living spaces across the Kansas City metro. That includes fiberglass and concrete pools, decks, covered structures, and full outdoor living environments that turn a backyard into a destination.

Clients can choose the pool that fits their vision. Fiberglass offers a faster install and low maintenance. Concrete offers complete design freedom for custom shapes and features. Around the pool, Blue Heron builds the spaces that make a backyard livable year-round: covered decks for shade and shelter, open decks for entertaining, and outdoor rooms designed for real family life.

What sets Blue Heron apart is the experience. Every proposal is reviewed with the client in person, so there are no surprises in the fine print. Each project runs on a detailed schedule and a professional management system, and clients always know where their build stands. The client has their own portal they can access any time day or night. If something changes, they hear about it first, from Blue Heron.

The company is most proud of how its clients feel when the project is done: confident they made the right call, and happy they trusted the right team. That’s the standard behind the brand promise: “We build exceptional pools and deliver the experience to match.”

For readers dreaming about their backyard, Blue Heron Pools wants them to know that a luxury pool shouldn’t come with a stressful build. It should be exciting from the first conversation to the first swim. Built for Beauty. Built for You.

What were you like growing up?
Skylor was born at KU Med in Kansas City and grew up in a working-class, blue-collar family. He lived all over the country growing up, but Kansas City was always home base. In 2017, he and his family put down roots for good.

As a kid, he was always outside: at the pool, on the ballfields, or riding BMX and jumping ramps with friends. Water was part of his life from the very beginning. He was just two weeks old on his first trip to the lake, and he has been drawn to the water ever since.

His entrepreneurial streak showed up early too. At 12, too young to legally hold a job, he started his first business at the lake. With help from his grandparents, he built a setup to empty campers’ waste tanks and worked it every weekend to earn his own money.

In a blue-collar family, construction or automotive work felt like the natural paths, and Skylor chose construction (Cars are for fun). He didn’t stop there. He became a certified welder and worked professionally in the trade, then studied microbiology and spent about a decade building and operating breweries and labs before returning to construction.

Today, he still loves working with his hands. He and his family live on some small acreage in Shawnee with goats, chickens, dogs, and cats. He has three kids and is quick to credit his wife as the reason any of it is possible. His goal is simple: fill life with great experiences for everyone. The memories are all we are left with in the end anyway!
