Meet Shawnna Murrell of Murrell Homes Real Estate Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawnna Murrell.

Hi Shawnna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My Light bulb Moment- I started in real estate in the Fall of 2016 after a light bulb moment after hearing someone quote “Your success is found in your daily habits”. Those words resonated with me and I began tracking what I did daily as if I was tracking my meals. It was on Day 3 when I realized that I have 5 real estate-related apps on my phone that I would look through at least a few times a week just to see the homes for sale. If a particular home caught my eye, I would often send to others to see if they liked it or to just “dream with me”. At that very moment of realization, I gasped and called my realtor at that time to proclaim, “I am supposed to be in real estate!” She told me the steps to get started, and here I am.

Getting started in Real Estate-

My first year was rocky to say the least. Thankfully, my realtor was considering starting a team and agreed to mentor me. I would work some of her smaller transactions that needed a little extra “love & attention” (LOL). These transactions had things from probate issues to foreclosures and short sales. At this time, real estate was my part-time gig, still working a full-time job in IT (which demanded extended hours), in most cases I felt overwhelmed. Nevertheless, I loved it and every time I made it to the closing table was a badge of honor.

Little did I know, 2017 had a few surprises for me. On the sunny Monday morning of August 21, 2017, I arrived to work to what I thought was a mandatory all-employee training session. The so-called “training” ended up being a full department termination without notice. What should have been a sad occasion, as shocking as it was, this was the push I needed to become a full-time agent.

Now a full-time entrepreneur and no steady income, it was time to beef up my efforts. I got laser-focused to grow my business and begin tapping into any additional training I could get my hands on. I went through my contacts, friends, and family to see who I could help buy or sell a home. In hindsight, those challenging transactions I went through my first year accelerated my knowledge of working with buyers, sellers, and investors and boost my confidence when I started getting new clients. My business started to grow at a rapid pace but the relationship with my mentor started to feel strained. Conflicts begin to arise that resulted into no more answered questions, phone calls, or texts.

A community was formed –

One day after talking through my frustrations life had thrown at me with my friend and hairstylist, Lusette Walker, she began to encourage me to not let it stop me and that I had learned so much that I could start my own team. She mentioned thinking of getting her real estate license and I said “YES…DO IT”. I knew she had a love for real estate so as she was encouraging me, I began to encourage her. The next words she spoke was “If you start a team, I will join, you could mentor me, and I will support you”. My response was “Let’s Do It!”

As I thought more on the team concept, I begin to seek a brokerage with supreme training. I moved to Keller Williams who is known for their top-notch education. January 2018, I officially joined Keller Williams Key Partners as a solo agent. One month later I had 3 brand new agents join me and The Murrell Homes Group was formed. I understand the importance of mentorship and support and I wanted to make sure I gave back everything that was given to me and more. I find joy in leading and guiding my team by giving them the same tools and techniques that has helped my success. It’s rewarding being able to provide them with a strong support system. It gives them confidence knowing they can create the business they desire and achieve success at any level. My team has grown tremendously over the last 3 years. What started as girl talk with my stylist (who is one of the savviest businesswomen I know) has now grown to a group of 10 talented, and amazing real estate agents. We have such a great bond; we take retreats together and our families hang out together. We are a family. They cheer me on, build me up, and push me as much as I push them. I can truly say I am blessed to be a part of the Murrell Homes Group.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not smooth at all. I shared some of those obstacles in my story,

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe some of the qualities that contributed to my success was the willingness to learn. I look for something new to learn every day. Even at times when I feel like I failed at something I know it is just a learning opportunity. Also, my passion to help others succeed. To have the honor of a front-row seat in someone else’s success show is truly the greatest.
