Today we’d like to introduce you to Shantai McCray.
Hi Shantai, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My career started as a Drug Court Case manager 25 yrs ago. It was in that role, I was introduced to dual-diagnosis and the need for therapy. Unfortunately, it wasn’t something I had exposure to due to the stigma around mental health in my community. I also began to see the importance of representation in the field and the lack of black therapists in the area. So I decided to go to graduate school to become a therapist in 2010. Since that time, I have worked in several organizations and schools. I started my own private practice in 2019 and began teaching as an Adjunct Professor in 2022. The transition to part-time practice and teaching provides a great balance. I am able to continue the individual work with clients and help to prepare future therapists.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are many challenges in the mental health field. They can range from the complexity of the issues clients present with to dealing with insurance as a private practitioner. The other side that people fail to see is the challenge of managing your personal struggles as a therapist while holding space for your clients. Due to the many challenges, I also had to go to therapy so I could be at my best when seeing clients. Although, we are knowledgeable regarding the tools necessary to improve mental health, we also need an objective person to process things with.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
It wasn’t until recently that I understood the tremendous impact a mentor could have on my life and career. My advice would be to keep an open-mind because you never know who can help you. I met my mentor while I was an adjunct at UMKC. It was completely unexpected but she has played a vital role in my recent career decisions. I would also encourage anyone looking for a mentor to increase your exposure to individuals who have walked the path you are on and ask questions.
