Meet Sebastian De Geer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian De Geer.

Hi Sebastian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I officially launched my dream, GeereD Up Films, LLC, in November of 2014. I actually spent five years before that teaching middle school Spanish. And while I cherished my time and the relationships I built with my students, I realized my true passion was STORYTELLING. I always had a blast making home movies with my family and friends throughout high school, and I started out as a film student in college.

Movies and film have always meant a lot to me, and I used to think that making movies was something that had to be done in Hollywood. I learned over time that making short “films” for businesses and nonprofits was very fulfilling for me, and also helped local people who were following their own dreams. So, when the opportunity presented itself, I went all-in on my new exciting venture of telling visual stories – and have never looked back!

Before making the leap full-time, I tested the waters by making some short promo videos for a family business (big shout-out to Hi-NRG Gymnastix in St. Louis!) and quickly fell in love with telling stories through the lens of a camera and the magic of editing. Every day when I wake up I am thankful to get to make a living doing what I love, and I could not imagine doing anything else.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s not always easy being a small business owner and a creative, but there is nothing else I would rather do. Kansas City has so many great resources to help entrepreneurs and small businesses, and I have been lucky enough to use several of those along my journey. The next client is never promised, which is why I appreciate everyone who puts their trust in me to make their story come to life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love to grab my camera out of my bag and create stories with clients from all sorts of different backgrounds! Part of what makes my “job” so fun is that every client has a unique story. Sitting down with them, getting to know them personally, and unearthing the “WHY” behind their business, and then showcasing that in a meaningful way, is why I love what I do.

I feel so fortunate that clients trust me enough to help deliver their “why” to audiences around the world. I am proud to have been nominated for three Emmys for my work in the industry, but true satisfaction is when a client has a positive experience with me and loves the end product we created together.

Whether it’s a 0:15 promo for Instagram or a longer “About Us” video for a website landing page, it is very fulfilling to get to share content visually with the world. I treasure the personal connections I develop with clients along the way.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can support me by telling others about the type of work I do and by following my Instagram and Facebook pages (@geeredupfilms). I also love collaborating with others who have a passion for creative storytelling, and sometimes a larger project needs to be completed by a group of people with different skill sets, such as graphic design and copywriting.
