Meet Savannah Brady

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Brady.

Hi Savannah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m the baker, bad-word-sayer, owner, and person behind The C Word. I started this business in March, but I’ve been baking for as long as I can remember. I had this dream job in the back of my mind for years, but didn’t think I’d actually be able to do it. After a conversation with my partner, Mike, he strongly encouraged me to pursue my dream of bad words on pretty cakes. I’m so thankful for that push to start The C Word.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The C-Word took off pretty quickly, probably before I was even fully ready. I’ve been baking all my life, but I was so scared to put all my (vegan😉) eggs in one basket. I remember the very first time I took orders, I messed up my buttercream and couldn’t make it work. I had to cancel all of my orders and I felt like a failure. People were so supportive, though, and it gave me the confidence to keep going. Everybody messes up; we just don’t always talk about it. I don’t want to seem like I have all my shit together all the time or that I never make mistakes. I’m human. My goal with this business is, to be honest, transparent, and inspiring. I want my cakes to be ones that don’t take themselves too seriously.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in vegan cakes and baked goods with bad words on them. I’m out to make a good cake. Not just good vegan cake, but good cake. Period. I’m proud of my products, but I’m mostly proud of my ethics. When I started at The C Word, I made choices that would impact my cost but that I wouldn’t settle for lessons. I use only natural colors and flavors, compostable packaging, compostable/reusable piping bags, and all organic sugar (typically, cane sugar is processed through bone char which makes it not vegan). I’m constantly trying to do better and learn more.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First, my partner Mike. I literally would not be here without him. He believed in me before I believed in myself. I can’t thank him enough for his love and support. My sister Cait also plays a huge role. She stepped in to help me with orders and social media even though she’s in Nashville. She’s my best friend and is always talking me up. She’s also pulled some all-nighters with me to prep for event days. Finally, my parents. I wouldn’t be the human I am today without them. They have been supportive of every creative endeavor I’ve ever had. They helped shape my sense of humor, my ethics, my morals and beliefs, and they continue to show me how to be a good person. (Also, all of the people above are my, probably slightly biased, taste testers). 🙂
