Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Reese.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
We are a small in-home French Bulldogs hobby breeder near Kansas City, MO. This is our 3rd year in the breeding business. My husband and I work full time and do this on top of it, which is its full-time job alone. I have always wanted a French bulldog as a pet, and my husband was against small dogs. He always said big dogs only. Eric said if we ever got a Frenchie, he would want to breed them, which I was not a fan of, nor did I think I would ever be doing this. Once I spoke to some friends about breeding and did more research myself, I decided I could do this. Now I work full time, mainly from home, and take care of my Frenchies full time! Our dogs are our family and were raised at home. It takes a lot to raise them and care for the puppies when they come, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. The whole process is amazing! It is so rewarding when you have put your heart and soul into raising healthy, loving pups and can find the best homes that love them as much as I do.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is much to learn about breeding them and ensuring they are healthy. From picking the right stud to go with your female health testing, progesterone testing, c-sections, vet visits, and the no sleep when puppies are here. The first month is critical for the puppies to ensure they are gaining weight, feeding and not aspirating, and just keeping your eye on them so they stay healthy and do not get sick. So far, other than no sleep, we have had as smooth of a road as you could have for now, but with every litter, there is a chance something could go wrong.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In my regular full-time job, I am a loan coordinator, but I breed French Bulldogs with this business. I am super proud of providing healthy, loving puppies to loving homes! What sets us apart is that we take no shortcuts in breeding. We want to ensure we produce healthy puppies, and we will get anything necessary to make the process best for the puppies.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Having a successful program, I would love not to work at a bank any longer but to focus on our Frenchie program! We would love to be able to get more established and start donating food and necessities to animal shelters that need them!
