Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Duncan.
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, I’m Sam. I am the creative mind behind Samantha Duncan Photography, here near Kansas City. I’m a self-proclaimed coffee snob, I adore Music, and I’m a lover of thrifting and vintage glassware. I wear many hats, I’m a Mama of 3, and am married to my “high school sweetheart”. I’m a Jesus lover, who is “Saved by grace through faith.” You can usually find me with a coffee in-hand and a baby on my hip.
I became a photographer when my Grandpa gave me a film camera at the age of 13. I admired my grandfather’s work as a photographer and wanted to be as good as he was. It didn’t take long for this “hobby” to become an obsession of sorts!
My grandfather one day surprised me with my very own novice grade digital camera (I still have it too). I was beyond excited! I took pictures of anything and everything that would let me. I began going to my local zoo’s photography club, and learned all I could about nature photography.
When I joined 4-H I immediately wanted to pursue photography. I stared taking photographs of concerts, and people. I entered several of my photographs into the 4-H fair. One of my photographs even went to the Missouri State Fair! Needless to say, I was hooked!
Fast forward to today. I am an artist capturing the moments that we often glance over in our crazy busy lives. Being able to immortalize the parts of life that we fondly look back on is an amazing experience. Seeing the world through a camera lens is like looking through a time capsule. I’ve grown up with a camera in my hand, and I intend to keep it that way.
I adore being invited into the most precious times in people’s lives. I believe every family deserves to have photographs that showcases who they are, and it is my goal to do exactly that!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If I tried to claim this has been an “easy” job choice I’d be lying. There are so many AMAZING photographers in the KC area, and finding the clients that don’t just want the “cheapest” option is quite difficult.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in in-home Newborn photography and Family photography. My newborn sessions are different from your average studio sessions. I go to my clients, and we take photos in their home. We work at baby’s pace and they stay in their parents’ arms for the majority of the session. I don’t do the little props and the detailed swaddles. I believe babies were made to be in mama and daddy’s arms as much as possible, so that’s how I choose to keep them during my sessions.
My family photos are more than just cute posing. My clients come to me because they want a relaxed setting and to have photos that feel like they represent the members of their family well. I want my families to have fun, and not feel “silly” in front of my camera.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Ideally I’d love to be able to incorporate more birth sessions. I absolutely feel like the Lord has placed on my heart to be a birth photographer once my littles are a bit older.
