Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Figueroa.
Hi Roger , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
One of the most meaningful risks I’ve taken recently was stepping away from a career I spent nearly a decade building as a nationally recognized fashion designer. Rather than staying in what was familiar, I chose to pursue my esthetician license, driven by a desire to expand my knowledge and deepen my expertise in the esthetics industry. This transition is an intentional step toward a larger vision: creating a future business where fashion, art, beauty, and esthetics seamlessly come together in one transformative space.
After graduating from esthetician school, I began interviewing for positions within the industry. Through that process, I quickly realized that if I wanted to truly make a difference, continue what I had built over the years, and provide clients with a safe, inclusive environment where they felt seen, heard, and cared for, I would need to create that space on my own. With that realization, I began networking, seeking guidance from industry professionals and business owners, and touring suite spaces throughout the area.
Before long, the vision I had imagined began to take shape. From designing and decorating the studio to establishing the values that would guide every client experience, I intentionally created a space where everyone is welcome, science-backed skincare and continued education are at the forefront, and personalized, intentional care is the priority. Today, I am proud to be celebrating one month in business as Skin by Roger LLC in Shawnee, Kansas. Through results-driven skincare treatments, relaxation-focused services, and a commitment to ongoing learning, I am building a business that reflects both my professional evolution and my passion for helping others feel confident in their skin.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the greatest challenges in this journey has been that entrepreneurship was never part of my immediate plan. My intention after graduating esthetician school was to join an established business, learn from experienced professionals, immerse myself in the industry, and continue refining my vision before eventually opening a space of my own. However, as I navigated the interviewing process, I realized that the environment I hoped to create for clients and the standards I wanted to uphold did not fully align with the opportunities available to me at that time. Opening my own studio so early in my career felt intimidating and uncertain, but I also knew I had built a strong support system of mentors, family, friends, and fellow professionals who believed in me and encouraged me to take the leap.
Another challenge has been finding my place within an industry that can often feel oversaturated. With so many talented estheticians and skincare professionals offering similar services, I had to ask myself what would truly set me apart and how I could communicate that to my community. Building a brand that reflects my values has required constant self-reflection, creativity, and confidence. Rather than competing solely on services, I chose to focus on creating an experience. My studio was intentionally designed to feel calm, welcoming, aesthetically inspiring to all, and a place where clients can disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with themselves.
I have also worked to distinguish my practice, so I have developed a unique approach that incorporates facial massage techniques, something that began to set me apart while I was still in school. These techniques not only enhance treatment outcomes but also create a deeper sense of relaxation, connection, and intentional care. While the path has not unfolded the way I originally imagined, the challenges have strengthened my confidence as a business owner, has reinforced the importance of staying true to my vision, and most importantly I’m very grateful that I followed this career path.

My approach to skincare is shaped by an unconventional journey. Before entering the esthetics industry, I spent nearly a decade as a nationally recognized fashion designer, where I developed a deep understanding of artistry, aesthetics, attention to detail, and creating experiences that make people feel confident and seen. I bring those same principles into every treatment I provide.
What truly differentiates me is my commitment to blending results-driven skincare with intentional human connection. While many providers focus solely on products or protocols, I prioritize education, individualized treatment plans, and helping clients understand their skin so they can feel empowered in their skincare journey. I believe great esthetics is both a science and an art and the products I use in the treatment room are perfectly design to bring this vision to life.
My signature facial massage techniques have also become a defining part of my practice. Since esthetics school, I have been passionate about incorporating advanced massage methods that not only enhance relaxation but also support circulation, sculpting, lymphatic drainage, and overall skin health. This creates a treatment experience that is both therapeutic and results-oriented.
Beyond the treatment room, I have intentionally created a space where everyone feels welcome, respected, and cared for. Skin by Roger was built to be a quiet retreat from the outside world where clients are not simply receiving a facial; they are experiencing personalized care in a space where their goals, comfort, and well-being are the priority.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If I could offer one piece of advice to someone starting their own suite, it would be to trust your vision, even when the timeline doesn’t look the way you originally planned. There will always be reasons to wait until you feel more experienced, have more clients, or have everything figured out. The reality is that much of entrepreneurship is learning as you go and being willing to adapt.
Focus on creating an experience rather than trying to compete with everyone around you. The beauty industry can feel crowded, but no one else has your unique story, perspective, personality, and approach. Instead of worrying about what others are doing, invest your energy into defining what you want clients to feel when they walk through your door and build your business around that experience.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Seek out mentors, network with other professionals, and learn from people who have already navigated the challenges you’re facing. Building relationships within the industry has been one of the most valuable parts of my journey.
Most importantly, remember that your suite is more than just a treatment room, it’s a reflection of your values. Every detail, from the atmosphere you create to the way you care for your clients, contributes to your brand. Stay committed to continued education, remain authentic, and be patient with yourself. Growth takes time, but consistency, intention, and genuine care will always leave a lasting impression.
