Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Gaither.
Hi Robert, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, so out of college, I decided to buy into a Franchise. I started with Schlotzsky’s Deli. I actually put together, packaged, and submitted my SBA Loan Application and got it funded through Boatman’s Bank. That was my first experience in Commercial / Business Lending. When I decided to exit the Quick Service Food Industry, I applied my skill and knowledge with computers and the internet, and went to work for a Mortgage Company, putting together a Commercial / Business division of the company. Eventually I branched off on my own and Founded Mid America Capital Group in 2009, and I’ve been in this field ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Lots of struggles. When I started as a Mortgage Broker, it was right before the Mortgage Collapse. Luckily, my Commercial expertise allowed me to stay in the industry. I founded the company with one partner, but he left in 2012 to become the head of the SBA division for a local Bank. We also had a Business Development Officer that left in 2014 to become a Business Broker. I’ve had to learn how to wear all of the hats, but that’s made me a better business owner.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My specialty is knowing who is lending for a specific type of loan. That expertise allows me to get deals funded that were otherwise turned down by a different lender. Almost 100% of all deals I see have already been turned down. I am the place to go when the banks say no.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is often a combination of preparation, action, and opportunity, not just chance. I believe that you make your own luck. It’s often about perception. If you’re not outwardly focused, you won’t perceive opportunities. I like to think that I’ve had pretty good luck in my life, because I prepare, take action, and I always pay attention.
