Today we’d like to introduce you to Robbi Edwards.
Hi Robbi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Soulcare Skin Studio came about as a result of my own journey with getting older, becoming an empty nester, and healing parts of myself that I didn’t even know were broken. One day after all 4 of our kids had grown up and left for their own adult lives, I realized that I had no idea who I was. I had spent so many years caring for them, my husband, and my hospital patients without ever taking time to care for myself. I was smack dab in the middle of menopause during this period as well. Raging hormones and major life changes aren’t a great recipe for good mental health. I no longer recognized the woman in the mirror physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. I knew something had to change so I started the process of getting to know and LOVE myself. Probably for the first time ever. I quickly realized that too many other women were struggling with the same thing. It became my mission to help them rekindle the most important relationship in their lives as well. The one with themselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I heard one time that all overnight successes take at least 7 years and that’s pretty accurate for my journey. I am a retired RN and nurse educator. Yes, you heard that correctly. I walked away from good “stable” careers to become an esthetician in my 40’s and go into business as a solo entrepreneur. Learning new skills with menopause brain fog was HARD. I remember coming home from estie school after just a few weeks and crying to my husband that I couldn’t get the hang of lymphatic drainage techniques. I was by far the oldest in my class and wanted to quit every day, but something told me to keep going so I did. It’s funny that lymphatic drainage almost ended my career before it even started because now it’s one of my specialties.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My previous careers really prepared me for what I’m doing now. I was a trauma nurse in the burn unit, performing wound care and watching skin repair from the most destructive forces. I taught anatomy and physiology at the college level and had a special gift of helping my students remember all of cellular processes that happen inside of the body’s largest organ. I feel like I see skin differently than other providers. I’m able to think outside of the box and use the body’s natural healing mechanisms to affect change instead of just slapping a cream or medicine on the problem. A lot can be said for how we SPEAK to ourselves as well. I don’t just mean positive affirmations. Our words have the power of life and death. Choosing to speak LIFE over our skin instead of complaining about it every chance we get can actually cause transformation at the molecular level and repair DNA damage!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
This entire midlife crisis career has been one giant risk after another. From going back to school, to starting a practice in Maine then having to move to the “big city” and starting over, to being looked over for jobs because of my age, to putting my introverted self in awkward networking events to meet new people, to opening a small room here, to moving into an actual studio, I could keep going for days. In my opinion, regret is a lot harder than risk. I didn’t want to live another 40 years thinking WHAT IF. The days leading up to now have been incredibly hard but incredibly worth it. I thought after being a big fish in a little pond that I could never cut it somewhere like Kansas City because I would be a little fish in a big pond. Imposter syndrome tried to stop me countless times. I’m so grateful that I didn’t listen to the negative self talk and kept building the vision God gave me.
