Meet Rob Hoskins of Olathe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Hoskins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been working with my hands most of my life, starting as a maintenance technician working with my dad and then going into construction building and remodeling houses. After trying many different trades, I learned that I enjoyed working in the electrical side of things. I worked for a few companies who trained me as an electrician and grew my skills in the field. I always enjoyed the idea of owning my own company and after years of working with others I finally came into a position with my family and skill, that felt that God was leading me into starting Hoskins Electric. Starting a business in January of 2020 was terrifying but it seemed to be going well, then the pandemic shut down the world and I figured that it was a good effort, but not the right time for me to start a business. Then phone call after phone call came in and 2020 ended up being the perfect time for me to begin. It was just smaller jobs of fixing an outlet or changing a fixture but through word of mouth Hoskins Electric began to grow and become what it is today; an electrical service company working to give quality work for a fair price. Where my aim is not to price gouge but to focus on making things better to the best of my abilities.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Heck No! It has been terrifying and trial after trial. I have learned though that God is a great provider and He always gives me the knowledge and strength and jobs that I need to continue on. Starting right before a pandemic and then going through the pandemic was a tough time. Even though it was the perfect start to my business I had to be cautious with all the sickness. Then I learned the hard way when my family got CoVid the first time that rescheduling and recovery is not like just hopping back into it after you take time off from work. Then there was the time that I fell and broke my foot and was out of work for 8 weeks with surgery and healing. That really took about a year before I was finally built back up again. Those are the big times then there are the slower times that I am still working on getting used to when business slows down because of people planning vacations, school starting and breaks, and holidays.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Master Electrician. I work mostly on residential and commercial projects from adding lights and outlets, to mounting tv’s and installing car chargers. I try to tackle as many electrical jobs that I can, while keeping time for my family as the priority. Over the years I have learned I have a knack for troubleshooting issues and repairing problems. I love to learn new things and try my hand at many different projects. I would say the thing that I am most proud of would be the fact that I haven’t lost the desire to keep doing the best that I can, and not just try to get as much work as possible. One of the things that I want to keep in mind is that I work to live not live to work; so that I am able to spend as much time with my family as possible. Something that I think sets me apart from others is that I enjoy my job and what I do. It is a skill that God has given me and I want to give Him the thanks that He deserves, and I do that by doing the best of my abilities on every big or small project that I take on.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I would equate this as to God’s grace. He is the one whom I firmly believes helps me while I am blind fishing a wire through a ceiling so that I do not have to drill a bunch of holes that will need to be patched. Or times where a job is cancelled and another person reaches out needing something done quickly. He is the one who provided me the work and the connections that I have today to keep providing for my family. There have been so many times over the years where things have fallen into place and happen just perfectly that I can’t say it is luck, but that God is helping me get through the day, week, month, and years.
