Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Rojas.
Hi Rebecca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Kansas City from Lacrosse WI about 15 years ago. I was looking for a fresh start. My sister and her family lived here so I thought it would be a good idea to try here.
I was working as a nanny and a waitress. I really wanted to go back to school but was not sure for what. I’ve always been interested in skin care but was unsure if that was worth pursuing. One day when I was getting my brows waxed I mentioned that I was thinking about going to school for skin care. She was so encouraging that I decided right then I was going to go for it.
While in school I discovered I really preferred waxing to doing facials. My first job was at a salon where I did facials, waxing and eyelash extensions. Then I took a job at a body waxing center where I got a lot of experience. Then Covid hit. It was a very surreal time for everyone. I had time off which allowed me to reevaluate what’s important to me. When I was able to return to work I just knew I could no longer work someplace where I
felt so unhappy. So, I started to device a plan to go out on my own. I remembered one of clients had mentioned that she had a room for rent if I was interested. At the time she mentioned it I thought no way, too risky. But now I knew I had to try. I reached out to her and the room was still available. I was so nervous and worried about everything. How would I know what to do? How would I be able to afford lowering my income while simultaneously increasing my expenses? Kelly who I rented the room from, and still do to this day, was such a big help. I truly appreciate her. Now it’s been five years of running my little wax shop and I am so happy I took a chance. I love where I am and what I do for a living. I have great clients and have had some for nearly 10 years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Along the way there have definitely been some obstacles. My first year on my own I had 4 wax pots go bad. That was pretty expensive. There was a lot of stress about getting shipments of wax and other supplies since things were still running slow after Covid. My wax room has flooded a few times. Luckily it didn’t get to anything electrical. Also the air conditioner went out which makes it very difficult to wax since the room needs to be on the chilly side. All in all nothing too bad.
