Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Kennedy.
Hi Rachel, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, thanks for having me! The concept of Iron District was thought up by Rachel Kennedy, one of our co-founders. The idea was to bring a sustainable, colorful and unique outdoor courtyard to North Kansas City. Iron District takes pride in being the launchpad for small businesses and the goal is for them to be so successful that they outgrow us. We currently have tacos, salad, sliders, sushi, ice cream, smoothies, thai food, a bookstore, a candle shop, and three boutiques which makes us very unique; there’s something for everyone!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We’re grateful to have the support we’ve had. We’ve been lucky to not have experienced many obstacles, but the high temperatures this Summer were a struggle for sure! With being an outdoor courtyard, we’re weather dependent which can sometimes cause chaos in times of rain or extreme heat.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Our Co-founder, Rachel Kennedy, started as the owner of a food truck named Plaintain District. She brought that concept in house and co-developed Iron District with Zach Taylor. Today, she works hard on the backend and fufills more of a business role as she made the decision to since close Plaintain District.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Starting a business is definitely a risk…but a risk worth taking! You see every little detail through a microscope when it’s your own idea – you want it to be perfect. I think that can be good though because that’s how you achieve greatness. The most rewarding part of this risk is seeing people say good things about Iron District.
