Today we’d like to introduce you to Paty Figtree.
Hi Paty, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Moved from omaha NE right before Covid. Wasn’t the plan to take time off when I just relocated my business of a decade to a new town…. But it gave me my first REAL downtown to reflect on what I wanted from this career in a new space. So I revamped what I offered and how I presented myself a bit, and once everything started functioning again, I was super honed in on only services that brought me joy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Besides this career already not being for the faint of heart? Being my own boss for 8 years now and doing all my own promotion? Besides Covid happening when I just restarted my career in a new city?
.
Learning to focus on what I wanted while struggling with ADHD.
Finding where I FIT in this industry with my peers.
Teaching myself about vivids because there’s not a whole lot of education for them out there.
Finding other like minded, driven stylist to collab and work with in an industry that tends to be a struggle to find that in.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been known for my vivid work almost my entire 17 year career. That really starting taking off about year 5 when I honed in on color correction and learning all about the blinding world. Once I had conquered the hard stuff, I started getting creative and adding vivids to those canvases. But especially after I moved to KC where there was a larger market for alternative hair. I special almost EXCLUSIVELY in vivid color. Undercut designs whether etched in OR colored. With a side of festival braiding to keep it extra fun.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Only accepting like minded individuals as guests and sticking to my guns on doing only services that brought me joy!
Working with new models and photographers that I had never met and hoping that the content turned out.
Moving from a full service salon into my own suite and doing everything for myself.
Traveling with a hairstylist I’d only met once to festivals and working their braiding bar to up my festival braiding skills.
Creating, and Entering my work in a brand new Vivid Hair Show (the rainbow convention), then FLYING there (NYC) to see what panned out. (I won my first award!)
Starting my own line of festival braiding hair and launching it online while also expanding my family by getting pregnant.
Pricing:
- Vivids are $111 an hour, it makes for easy math, plus I love to see angel numbers in my life.
- Undercut designs, $45 OR for bigger projects, $1 a min. Again, EASY math!
- Festival braids, start at $110, but those vary in range of complexity so much I have to usually see the undo before I can really quote. The craziness of some styles is one of the reasons I love them so much!!
