Meet Oralee McKinzy of Life 360

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oralee McKinzy.

Hi Oralee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello, I’m Oralee McKinzy, Executive Director of Life 360, a nonprofit organization based in Kansas City, MO. At Life 360, we’re dedicated to promoting progressive technologies and methodologies to enhance education and preserve history through digital and virtual programming. Our mission is to honor and remember the rich contributions and history of the diverse communities that built Kansas City.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a descendant of enslaved people who helped shape various Missouri communities and as a member of a family with deep roots in local political and social activism, I’ve always been driven by a commitment to preserving and sharing our history. Raised to value the stories of all Kansas City residents, I’ve been working with The Watkins Foundation since 2008. Our work focuses on ensuring that the history of enslaved Kansas City ancestors buried on land now owned by the Kansas City International Airport is honored through digital exhibits and other programming.

At Life 360, we are also spearheading an initiative to capture and preserve the life histories of numerous elders with strong connections to Kansas City and Missouri. This effort aims to enrich educational programming and develop a comprehensive local heritage archive.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My background in education, starting from 2004, has been deeply rooted in supporting positive youth development, particularly for at-risk youth and those facing multiple challenges. Additionally, my experience as a community health worker and peer support specialist has equipped me with a unique perspective on engaging with diverse youth and their families.

Building on my education in Aviation Maintenance Technology and Organizational Leadership, I address the needs of culturally diverse communities, ensuring that our programs are impactful and inclusive. Currently, I’m collaborating with the Kansas City Museum to develop engaging programming for youth and families. This work, part of a broader effort to capture the complete story of Kansas City’s history, will contribute to ongoing exhibits and Life 360’s programming.

We’re also excited to be working with Creative City KC Inc. to develop the American Music Apprenticeship program. This initiative is designed to foster a true partnership with residents and capture the rich musical heritage of Kansas City.

What matters most to you? Why?
My commitment remains steadfast in ensuring that our community’s history is preserved and celebrated. Through every project and initiative, my goal is to honor our past while creating a meaningful impact for the future.

Thank you for your interest in our work and for supporting our mission to celebrate and remember the diverse stories that define our community.
