Meet OCTAVIO GALICIA of Prairie Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to OCTAVIO GALICIA.

Hi OCTAVIO, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My family is full of the most determined, hardworking and caring people I have ever met, I feel incredibly lucky to have them right by my side and push me to achieve greatness. I’ve always been very grateful of how many opportunities are available to me because of how hard my family worked to get here, it was 45 years ago that my abuela and abuelo came to this country and they never stopped working for a better life and reminding their family of where we started. Their determination has allowed me to explore my creativity and see how I can push myself for the better, I’m forever grateful of my entire family.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say I’ve lived a relatively smooth life, my family had to work to provide me with the life I have now and that has allowed me to explore my creativity in exciting ways. My parents would always remind my brothers and I of how fortunate we were with regular trips to Mexico to see our culture and how not everyone lives like we do. It’s important to live outside your bubble and realize you have been given an amazing opportunity to find yourself in a way many others are unable to do. That is what gives me the same determination that I see in my family.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My creative journey has progressed slowly throughout my educational life, I’ve always loved art and wondered how it came to be so it was no surprise I grew into graphic design. All of my work requires passion, otherwise it just feels lackluster and boring. Going into college I discovered a new outlet of creativity, LEGO Design was a fascinating venture that had so many unique areas of design rolled into one that I was hooked and needed to know more. LEGO was my favorite toy growing up and is responsible for my love of design, I became enamored all over again and started to take note of how LEGO designed their sets, boxes, websites and more. You can find my work on Instagram @og_brick_studio and I create custom LEGO builds then use graphic design to highlight the build either with background art or a mock-up box. I got my start on LEGO Ideas, a website by LEGO for fan builders who could submit ideas for the chance of it becoming a real LEGO set on store shelves. Mine didn’t quite make the cut but the experience was so much fun that I kept going and I have 6 builds on my Instagram as of right now. The online community is so fun and rewarding but I’ve never met someone here in KC that looks under the hood of LEGO quite like I do. I have also recently discovered how to design my very own minifigures! So far I have created myself and my three brothers in LEGO form and it’s probably my favorite thing to make. It is a blast to recreate the LEGO style and shape our unique features, In case anyone is curious, I use Bricklink Studio for creating my LEGO builds and Mecabricks for the minifigure creations. I could go on for hours on the intricacies of the custom LEGO community so if you have any questions about how to get into LEGO design you can ask me more on my instagram!

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I feel quite lucky to have the opportunity to explore creative avenues and build myself up, however, I attribute this to the determination and hardwork of my parents and grandparents. Without their persistence I never would be able to find myself this way, luck has certainly helped us along the way but I wouldn’t say it’s the reason we are here.
