Meet Nick McIntyre of Wineteer Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick McIntyre.

Hi Nick, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My Story

When I was a kid, I was always building something. Whether it was forts, treehouses, or cars and trucks out of scrap materials, I loved creating things that could actually be used. That hands-on creativity grew into a lifelong passion for design and craftsmanship. I spent hours sketching, painting, sculpting, and experimenting with how things fit together — and I was always trying to improve the process along the way.

In high school, my love for building evolved into a love for art. I enjoyed every kind of project — clay, charcoal, painting, and sculpture. That led me to study art education in college, with plans to become an art teacher. But life had other plans. I found myself in Kansas City, where I got my start in construction. I learned to build cabinets at a young age and quickly picked up more advanced skills — especially in radius and custom work that required a designer’s eye and a craftsman’s touch. That kind of detail-oriented work opened the door to more creative building opportunities.

Eventually, I joined Wineteer Construction and began working under Mike Dodd as a project manager. Over time, I grew into roles as a designer and salesperson, which allowed me to combine my artistic background with construction expertise. In 2021, I bought the company from Mike and began leading it into what we now call Wineteer 2.0.

Today, Wineteer Construction is a mid- to upper-end remodeling company specializing in kitchens, baths, and room additions. We also focus on Aging in Place and Universal Design — projects that allow homeowners to stay comfortably and safely in the homes they love, without sacrificing beauty or style.

We operate with four talented crews and an incredible office team that keeps everything running smoothly. Together, we’ve built a company that combines craftsmanship, care, and creativity — staying true to the passion that started it all: building things that make life better.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a Business

Running a company is like anything else in life — if it’s going to be good, it’s going to take a lot of hard work. I’ve always compared it to athletics. No matter the sport — football, wrestling, volleyball, golf — success comes from long hours of training, refining techniques, developing processes, and competing at a high level. Hard work and a little natural talent combine to create something great.

Running a business is no different. It requires long hours, consistent effort, and a willingness to constantly refine your skills. You have to practice, repeat, and push yourself to find new and better ways to do things. Over time, that discipline shapes you into something unique — it separates you from the crowd.

At Wineteer Construction, that’s exactly what we strive for. As a boutique remodeling company, our goal isn’t to be the biggest — it’s to be the most genuine. We approach every project with the client’s best interest at heart, whether it’s a kitchen designed for entertaining, a cozy bath retreat for two, or a thoughtfully planned home for someone living independently with a pet.

We also take pride in our specialization in Aging in Place and Universal Design — creating custom solutions that allow people to stay comfortably and safely in their homes, no matter their physical needs.

In the end, business — like life — is full of challenges you can’t always predict. But the real reward comes from learning through those moments, solving problems, and emerging stronger. The hard work pays off. It always does.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
About Wineteer Construction

At Wineteer Construction, we believe that remodeling is more than just changing a space — it’s about improving the way people live. We’re a boutique remodeling company specializing in kitchens, baths, and room additions. We also focus heavily on Aging in Place and Universal Design, helping homeowners remain in the homes they love by making them safer, more functional, and more beautiful — without sacrificing style or comfort.

What sets Wineteer apart is our genuine, client-first approach. We don’t just build projects; we build relationships. Every design begins with understanding how people actually live in their homes — their routines, challenges, and dreams for their space. From there, we create tailored solutions that reflect their lifestyle and personality. Whether it’s a chef-inspired kitchen for entertaining, a spa-like bath for relaxation, or thoughtful modifications for accessibility, our goal is to make every project personal, practical, and timeless.

We’re known for our craftsmanship and design detail. Because of my background in art and fine woodworking, design plays a central role in everything we do. We don’t just “install” — we create, often crafting one-of-a-kind spaces with unique layouts, materials, and finishes that stand out among other remodelers. Our projects reflect a balance of creativity, precision, and functionality.

We’re also proud of our team culture. Our field crews are small, highly skilled, and dedicated to the craft. We operate like a family business — because we are one — and our clients feel that in the way we communicate, show up, and follow through. We’re not chasing volume; we’re chasing excellence and trust.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of being authentic. Wineteer Construction has been part of Kansas City’s remodeling community since 1988, and we’ve grown by holding onto the values that got us here: honesty, integrity, craftsmanship, and care.

Our mission is simple — to design and build beautiful, functional spaces that help people live better. That’s what we specialize in. That’s what we love. And that’s why we do what we do every day.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
On Risk and Reward

I’ve always believed that risk isn’t something to fear — it’s something to understand. Personally, I love mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, and spending days on remote river trips. On the surface, those things might look dangerous, even reckless. But the truth is, with the right training, preparation, and respect for the environment, much of that risk is mitigated. The more you understand the variables — the terrain, the water, the conditions — the safer and more enjoyable the experience becomes.

That same mindset applies directly to how we approach business and construction at Wineteer Construction. Every project involves some level of risk — whether it’s design decisions, scheduling, budgeting, or taking on a unique or complex remodel. But rather than avoiding risk, we study it, plan for it, and prepare our team to manage it effectively. We invest in systems, communication, and training so that challenges don’t become crises.

Risk, to me, is essential for growth. You can’t build something great without stepping into the unknown now and then. The key is to do it intelligently — with intention and preparation. At Wineteer, we don’t shy away from new ideas or difficult projects; we simply work hard to ensure those risks are calculated and controlled.

We don’t get it right every single time — no one does — but when the goal is well thought out and the process is built with care, the results are almost always worth it. Risk, when managed wisely, is what leads to innovation, confidence, and ultimately, success.

Pricing:

  • On Pricing and Value Pricing remodeling projects is a lot like shopping for a car. You can buy a smaller car that gets great gas mileage. It has four doors, four tires, and maybe even some nice upgrades — leather seats, heated seats, or a sunroof. It might still be expensive for some, but it’s the right car for their needs and budget at that time. Then there’s the mid-level sedan. It also has four doors and four tires, but it offers more comfort, space, and features that make it a better fit for certain lifestyles. It’s a step up — not because it changes what a car is, but because it changes what the car does for you. And then there are luxury cars. They offer something beyond the basics — an experience. The materials, the craftsmanship, the performance — everything feels elevated. Kitchens, bathrooms, and remodeling projects work the same way. There are entry-level projects with durable, cost-effective materials; mid-range remodels that blend style and function with more options; and high-end luxury spaces where every detail is customized. At Wineteer Construction, our goal is simple: to match the right project with the right client. We help homeowners find that perfect balance between design, function, and investment — a project that makes sense for their lifestyle, their home’s value, and their long-term goals. We’re not here to oversell or overbuild. We’re here to create something that fits — beautifully, intentionally, and within reach.
