Meet Mitch Smedley of Blue Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitch Smedley.

Mitch Smedley

Hi Mitch, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
We opened in August 2020 (mid-pandemic). After I had spent 20 years in the industry, I found a few missing links in the plumbing service world that we vowed to correct. One was culture. The culture within a lot of plumbing companies could be better. This leads to high turnover and a miserable place to work. The other needed to be more experienced. That turnover felt by many companies results in their staff being very new and inexperienced. We started Smedley Plumbing to correct both of those issues. We have a 10,000 guarantee that promises our customers a plumber with a minimum of 10,000 hours of experience. This means we hire very experienced people. That experience level also allows us to lend to the excellent culture within our small company.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business during the pandemic took work. Growing a business with such a high ownership cost takes work too. The hidden costs of running a top-quality plumbing company are steep. But the results are worth it. We’ve done so well with it that we started a podcast called The Void, where we help service-based trades professionals start their businesses. That spawned into a coaching program where we partner with a select few trades professionals and work with them directly to get their newer businesses to a very healthy level.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
One unique facet of our company is our #FamilyFirst program. We dedicate the first business day of each month to finding people within the community with necessary plumbing repair needs and simply no way to afford them. We put them on our schedule on that first day of the month and take care of those plumbing repairs free of charge. These days are some of the most rewarding days in our company. We meet some of the best people.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Luck is where preparation meets opportunity. We’ll be prepared and keep an eye out for opportunities. So by definition, we’ve been fortunate. It is lucky to open during uncertain times and continue to grow when it seems most everyone else says good help is hard to find.
