Meet Mike Day of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Day.

Hi Mike, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I went from casually taking photos with my family to posting some images of my favorite parts of Kansas City on some social media sites like Flickr back about 10-15 years ago. Visit KC took notice of my work and gave me a chance by using some of my images in their tourism channels.

From there my work caught fire and now I free lance for several tourism companies, a few calendar companies, National Parks Calendar, published in a book, and just lately was asked to work with Universal/Amblin Pictures on the new Steven Spielberg film “Disclosure Day” that will come out in June of 2026. They are using some of my images for set decoration.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I do photography part time so it’s not my full time gig. I love to photograph landscapes, nature, go hiking and just “get out there”. It’s my Kansas City images that have help me fund my travels. So is it a struggle, no not really as I really do it for pleasure. There are so many photographers these days so standing out in a crowd can be a challenge. The key I believe is to keep doing what you love/enjoy and people will find you.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Store Manager of a medium box retail establishment. Photography has been my therapeutic outlet. It’s been my passion for the last 10 years or so. Trying to get better at the craft and keep pushing myself.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Enjoying the work.
