Meet Mickey Shannon of Wichita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickey Shannon.

Hi Mickey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Mickey Shannon. I’m a fine art nature photographer; I began professionally photographing nature and landscape images around 2008. Initially, most of my photographs were of the Colorado Rockies. Shortly after, I took a trip to Switzerland that set off my business and love of photographing nature during my travels. Eventually, I began photographing closer to home here in Kansas. I was born and raised in Kansas, and I find some of our landscapes, such as the Flint Hills, very captivating. My online galleries are full of images close to home in Kansas to places like Hawaii, the Canadian Rockies, California, Colorado, the western US, and even some east coast locations like Florida and South Carolina. In 2018, I launched my first limited edition collection, which has grown leaps and bounds. I had hundreds of collectors of my work in most US states and a dozen countries worldwide. I’m also publishing my first coffee table-style photography book in early 2023 of my Kansas collections.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Not always. Learning by trial and error, whether it be the early days of becoming a better photographer or figuring out the best way to connect with fine art collectors to showcase my photograph, can take time. But a lot of that journey is half the fun. Seeing my photography business grow leaps and bounds over the past 5 years has been exciting. I went from selling small 8×12″ prints early on to having collectors purchase 90×60″ and larger pieces for their homes. There are always bumps along the way, but learning through those bumps helps me grow.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I create nature and landscape fine art photography. My work is almost exclusively done to create large, highly detailed fine art prints for collectors of my work. Some mediums I print my work on including Trulife acrylic prints and Chromaluxe metal prints. I love these mediums, as they look beautiful, both framed with elegant ROMA frames and unframed. While many of my collectors purchase my prints from Hawaii, Canada, California, and other beautiful tourist destinations, I’m also well known for my Kansas photography. I plan to publish a high-end coffee table-style book in early 2023 of my Kansas work.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I had perfect years in 2020 and 2021. A lot of my business through that time was online, so I continued to build my online presence, knowing I would eventually get out there to do art shows when things opened up more. But I’ve always emphasized on my website to sell my art. Just keep working hard.
