Meet Mick Henry of Raytown, Missouri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mick Henry

Hi Mick, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Originally how it started was kind of a crazy, Back in the day I used to sell weed and one night I got set up, robbed by a person that I thought was a friend. It was him and a friend and they told me if I turned around in my car they would kill me. I was so scared, shocked, and mad. I wanted revenge. I wanted to get stronger and get back at them. Me and a friend started going to the gym. We went a week and he actually stopped going the next week. I forced myself to go and ever since then I fell in love with the gym. First 6 months I really didn’t know what I was doing, but I met a lot of the “OGs” and became really cool with them to the point where they actually started helping me and teaching me. I forgot all about getting revenge, all about my situation that I had been in. I just wanted to get stronger and stronger. I loved the way I felt after a workout.
Fast Forward to 2020,
I just got fired from Zillow Home Loans and had to find another during covid. I got hired at Fedex and started thinking what the next move was. Fedex wasn’t going to be permanent. I found another job and it did not work so I went back to Fedex. I took a chance and put all my money I had at the time into NASM to start learning how to be a Personal Trainer. I started training people as well while I was studying. Fedex from 2am-8am, train clients from 2pm-7pm. The grind was real. I ended up getting a better paying job in 2021 and saved up because I knew, in my head, one day I would take that risk and go full time with training. 2023 comes and the job I was at the time was just getting really annoying with management, my mental health was declining. I went into the bosses office and told them I’m leaving in November. I gave them a month notice and they were cool about it.
I was so scared. I would go back and forth in my head. don’t quit, you need the money, or take that risk. You’ll never know if you don’t try. I had a few people that would say are you sure you want to do this? Do you have enough money saved up? Just had a lot of doubt coming my way which almost made me stay at the job. I ended up quitting and the next week I started my journey as a full time Personal Trainer November 2023.
As of right now I’m currently working on getting my Nutrition Coach certification.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely been a struggle, I won’t lie. First couple months I knew would be hard, but that didn’t stop me. I started promoting myself, creating flyers, and reaching out to other friends that I know that have businesses and talk to them about ideas and just learn from them.
Big obstacle is getting over the mental aspect of some days you will make $400, then the next couple days $0. You can’t get into your head and be down about it or else you will just dig yourself a deeper hole.
Another big one for me was having clients being late or last minute cancellations. Set boundaries on that right from the start. You need to tell me when you’re running late or if you cancel the session hour before it starts, I will charge you that session. Obviously things happen and I can understand that, but if you just forget then that’s on you. You have to be comfortable with having those uncomfortable conversations.
One last thing is dealing with family issues. my mom just got done beating cancer and right after that my dad had a heart attack and had to have open heart surgery. Trying to deal with all of this while running a business will get to you. I was going back and forth to the hospital, back to the gym, then back to the hospital takes a toll on you but I had to think positive. Thankful that he’s back at home going through rehab to get better.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Personal Trainer here at Slim Charlies Fitness in Raytown, Missouri. I really love working with beginner gym goers. There is a lot of intimidation when first going to the gym and I like to think that I am really good at making people feel comfortable in the gym, whether it be a client or just a member that comes in.
I’m known for being really outgoing while I train clients. I really try and become a person they can trust. I’m so proud of myself for taking that leap into full time training. My Mental Health has been through the roof ever since I quit my job to do this. Even on bad days I’m not in a bad mood. I just tell myself positive affirmations and keep that negative energy out. I think what sets me apart from other trainers is I want to be friends with my clients. Yes we will put in this work but also if you need a helping hand outside of training or just need someone to talk to I am always here. I’ve always been like that. You never know what a persons going through and maybe with a conversation or just being nice can help.
