Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Reece.
Hi Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a guy who loved music, technology, and bringing people together. What started as DJing small events eventually grew into DJ MIC Productions, and later into SmartMic Karaoke, a platform that’s now helping karaoke hosts and venues across the country.
The journey definitely hasn’t been a straight line. I’ve had successes, failures, setbacks, and opportunities that I never could have planned myself. Through it all, I’ve learned that if you stay consistent, treat people right, and keep showing up, doors eventually open.
Today I still host shows every week because I genuinely love what I do. Whether I’m behind a DJ booth, running karaoke, building software, or helping other entertainers grow their businesses, I’m grateful for every opportunity. Most importantly, I give all the glory to God. None of this would be possible without His guidance, provision, and grace throughout the journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has everything been smooth? Not at all.
The failures are inevitable. How you plan for failure is not. I’ve had to learn some lessons the hard way about clients, money, employees, politics and faith clashing with business.
I’ve also had to navigate some significant personal challenges while continuing to show up for my clients, my daughter, and the people who depend on me. Those seasons weren’t easy, but they taught me resilience, strengthened my faith, and reminded me to keep my focus on what truly matters.
Looking back, I can see God’s hand through all of it. The struggles helped shape who I am today. Every setback taught me something, every challenge made me stronger, and every victory reminded me where the credit belongs. Through it all, God has been faithful, allowing me to be faithful and present for my daughter. I’m grateful for both the blessings and the lessons.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
SmartMic Karaoke wasn’t some big startup idea. It started because I was running busy karaoke shows and getting tired of watching people stand in line just to sign up or ask if I had a song.
At first, I just wanted to make my shows run smoother. I knew I wasn’t always going to have extra staff helping me, so I started teaching myself how to build a simple web app where singers could search for songs and sign up from their phones. It solved a problem I was having every week.
Then people started asking for more features. Other hosts wanted to use it. Venues liked it. Singers liked it. So I kept building.
A little bit later, that little side project has grown into SmartMic Karaoke, a platform used by hosts, venues, singers, and karaoke competitions across the country. The funny thing is, I never really set out to build a software company. I was just trying to make karaoke night better.
I think that’s what makes SmartMic different. Everything in it comes from real experience behind the booth. If a feature exists, it’s because I probably needed it during a show at some point.
It’s been amazing to watch it grow, and I’m grateful for every opportunity that’s come from it. God has shown me and opened a lot of doors that I never could have opened myself.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
1000% it’s persistence.
I’m not the smartest person in every room, and I definitely haven’t had a perfect path. What I’ve learned is that most people quit too early. Whether it was building a business, learning software development, growing SmartMic Karaoke, or navigating challenges in my personal life, I’ve found that simply refusing to give up goes a long way.
If you’re willing to keep learning, stay humble, work hard, and trust God through the process, you’ll eventually get where you’re supposed to be. Success rarely happens overnight, but consistency compounds over time.
If there’s one thing that’s helped me the most, it’s showing up early for myself and others every day and taking the next step, even when I couldn’t see the whole path ahead.
