Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith McCarty.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I had always had an interest in photography. That curiosity grew and eventually, I asked for a camera for Christmas in middle school. I was so excited to learn how to use it and understand the different aspects of lighting, shutter speed, aperture, and other logistics specific to photography. As I got better and discovered my love for portrait photography, friends and peers began reaching out for me to do their photos. I remember charging only $10 and working hours and hours to perfect the photos.
Eventually, I started charging more and gaining more experience. As my clientele grew I realized I had the opportunity to create a Senior Model Program to further promote my business as well as provide a more affordable way for seniors in high school to take more senior portraits. It has been a great marketing tool as well as providing the chance to develop more personal relationships with my clients. This is now my third year having a Model Team and it is the biggest one yet.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel grateful to say it has been mostly smooth. However, I have come across people trying to take advantage of me due to my age. Being so young, a few people did not take me or my prices seriously. In these situations, I let my talent and professionalism speak for themselves. I love working with people who value my work and are more than happy to pay.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Most of my clientele are seniors in high school, but I do all types of portrait photography. I love working with professionals, families, couples, and seniors! Although the work I am most proud of is my high fashion-styled shoots with models. I hope to merge into more of that work in the near future.

If you are wanting to start a business and work for yourself, I can not recommend it more. It is a different type of workload, but the ability to create your own goals and schedule is worth it in the end.
