Meet Melissa Bruno of Lee’s Summit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Bruno.

Melissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started in the beauty industry 26 years ago. I got my nail license and worked part time and started a family. 14 years ago I became a single mom and decided to apprentice to do hair. I worked odd jobs while apprenticing to do hair to pay the bills. After getting my license I put in countless hours building my clientele. I literally started at the bottom and worked my way to the top. While working my way up I decided that I wanted to help other women achieve financial freedom. I wanted to help and encourage women to grow their business in a safe inspiring postitve environment. I also wanted to create a space for clients to feel welcome and not judged. In a safe, beautiful, and a serene environment for everyone who comes through our door. So I started looking into creating this space and of course I had to talk to my family and get them on board. I am now married with 5 children of my own and 4 step kids. Everyone was on board and everyone pitched in to create this space. It took 6 months from start to finish. We put in countless hours working in the salon to create a beautiful serene place. It was beautiful to see not only my family, but my friends and clients help to make this dream become a reality and to see all of them as excited and happy as myself.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not a smooth road. I have learned many lessons along the way. My kids sacrificed so much while I worked 12 hour days 4-5 days a week. I had to work nights while my kids were sleeping just to get by while I got my license to do hair.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a master stylist specializing in hair extensions lash extensions and blonding. I still do nails as well. But I would say my passion is for people. I am very intentional with my clients. It’s more than a service. I do life with these people. We laugh and cry together we celebrate each other. I truly love each and every one of them. My other passion is teaching. I love helping new stylists become the best stylist they can be. All the girls that work with me I adore. They become part of my family.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I believe what truly makes you the best hairdresser is the love and attention you show your clients and to never stop learning. This business is ever changing and education is so very important to stay relevant.
