Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Kottman.
Megan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for photography started back in high school while I was involved in the yearbook committee. From there I purchased my first dslr camera in college and started taking photos of my friends and family. I had plenty of encouragement from those close to me to go for a more professional gig! It’s been a slow growing business, I let it go at its own pace because I trust the universe will make it happen if it’s supposed to! This has been one of my most productive years yet and I’m so grateful to all those who have worked with me to help me get where I am!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been mostly smooth. I’d say my biggest set back was trying to start a face to face business in the height of the covid breakout. Turns out it’s incredibly difficult to get someone in front of a lens when the world itself has been charged with social distancing. I think I would most likely be “further” in my career if I wasn’t in such a delicate beginning phase during covid, but I also feel like I’m exactly where I should be in spite of it all. In the meantime of growing a small business, I spent my time working for Noah’s Cupboard as the chef’s assistant. I grew my passion for flower farming and now use the flowers I grow for different shoots I book any time possible.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a KC local photographer. Born and raised up North in the stunning town of Weston, MO. I’m known for helping my clients freeze a moment in time, to keep those important memories alive forever. Whether we are celebrating their child’s first birthday, or an opening of their business, or the biggest day of their life as they walk down the aisle, I’m there cheering them on and capturing it from all angles. I’m most proud of my work with growing families. I feel such a special connection to them as I see their whole lives together start to unfold. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing multiple families start as only a couple to now they have their arms filled with children! It’s such a treat to have a front row seat to people’s lives. I’m so honored to be the “first call” people make when they have an important life event, whether it be an engagement announcement, a baby on the way, a new business they’re starting, whatever it may be, they call me to help them announce it to their loved ones. What sets me apart from others is that I really mean it when I say I want to be there every step of the way! I want my clients to feel like friends, even if we just met. I want every shoot to feel like I’m catching up with old friends as we create art together. When I say that I am a family photographer, I mean I want to be your family’s photographer for life. What a dream to make connections through my work that earn me a lifelong friendship as well!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was very type-a, get things done, stick to the mold, jump through the hoops type of person. It really wasn’t until I was in college that I found my personality that challenged the way I was as a kid. I found myself in situations that most people did not choose for themselves, I didn’t want to move to the city and live in an apartment right after college, I chose to move to a farm and live in a tiny house while I worked in the most special restaurant I’ve ever known. It might have been the lonelier route to take in your 20’s, but I find myself looking back on that period of my life jealous of how I was able to spend my time then.
