Meet Lukas Hugunin of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lukas Hugunin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Sounds of Many started out a solo passion project by our lead singer Lukas Hugunin when he returned from Louisiana in 2016. When he returned he was jamming with Caleb Price who enjoyed the material and came aboard. Following that we constructed a line up, and started performing out and about. We ran through a few different lineups before solidifying and touring for a while in 2018-2020. In March of 2020 we were halted by the pandemic, and worked mostly on our own solo projects – however we did release a split EP with the band “Tapeside”. In late 2021 The Sounds of Many began performing again as a four piece which continued until the spring of 2023 when Lukas moved up to Kansas City. Following the relocation of the band up to Kansas City it took a while to construct a rock solid line up, but now we’re firing on all cylinders and have been enjoying the music scene here in Kansas City! The Sounds of Many is Lukas Hugunin, Jake Mager, Mitchell Bruce, Caleb Price, and Brad Farrow.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been anything but smooth! We’ve gone through dozens of members over the years and more setbacks than we can count. Financial setbacks, touring vehicles breaking down at the most inopportune times, members leaving at the worst possible time, but what matters is picking yourself up and moving forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We’re a rock and roll band that pulls inspiration from all around us, we’re primarily influenced by psychedelic rock and roll like the bands Love, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, or Jimi Hendrix. We’re also heavily influenced by garage rock bands like the Mummies, and shoegaze bands like My Bloody Valentine. We do our best to combine those aspects with a dash of pop sensibilities to make some entertaining rock and roll that people can get up and groove to! I’d say we’re most proud of our compositional abilities and how we’re able execute our recorded material in a live setting!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
It takes patience, the music scene is both an easy thing to access and a difficult thing to break into. It’s just as much a matter of patience as it is timing. But be positive, help when you can, and be present to support those around you. Lukas says ‘”Rising tides raise all ships’ is something his father has been telling him for ages”.
