Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Jordan.
Hi Lindsay, we’d love for you to introduce yourself.
I became an LPN in 2016 and a registered nurse in 2018. I loved my acute-care career; I worked in progressive care and then transitioned to critical care, my dream specialty, until Covid hit. The exhaustion, the mandated extra shifts, and the “take care of everyone but yourself” culture grew too much during Covid. I tried other nursing jobs in long-term care, and things only got worse. I began selling on Poshmark in 2015. This last year, I started using it as a second means of income, trying to transition out of the nursing field. To access the type of clothing I wanted to provide to my customers, I was told I would have to develop a website and start a company. So that’s exactly what I did growing up in a small town. There was always this stigma about maintaining the status quo of the community. You’re taught to be quiet so that others stay comfortable; this includes clothing attire for all occasions. Wear minimal, “don’t draw attention to yourself.” But this didn’t work for me. I have always loved the alternative style, streetwear, gothic culture, and evolving fashion. These are all things that are few and far between in rural culture. So I decided to make it available to everyone around me and those who can relate. I’ve spent my entire life trying to appease everyone around me, but I decided it was time to appease myself and the others out there who are just like me. That was how Linny J’s Closet was developed. Where you are encouraged to be you, no matter form, shape, or style that might come in, because, after all, you only live once, so you might as well live for yourself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When starting a business, there will always be bumps in the road. Building a customer base is this process’s largest and most daunting task. It can be discouraging. You’ll find out that strangers will become customers before friends and family and that those who encouraged you to follow your dreams and see this through won’t support you when push comes to shove. But dedication can overcome all of that. My dedication to my Poshmark closet has turned into 11,000 followers in 3 months. My social media pages have reached over 60,000 people since I launched on September 1st of this year. Once I began taking pictures of myself in the products I was selling, social media engagement skyrocketed. What people want to see when looking at a new business is you. It’s about learning as you go and learning from mistakes.
Great, so let’s talk business. Please tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others.
Linny J’s Closet is all about being you. I wanted to specialize in being different. Most of the clothing and items we sell aren’t typical of a brick-and-mortar football mom boutique. Linny J’s Closet offers a variety of women’s formal wear (prom, gala, homecoming, cocktail dresses), streetwear that includes a Y2K collection, and a goth/alternative inspired ‘Dark Paradise’ collection. Loungewear, and of course, our ‘attention seeker’ collection that includes everything bright, glam, and sparkly. One thing Linny J’s Closet is known for is the scrunchie zipper pouches made by yours truly. I sew three different sizes, the largest size accommodating even sunglasses and bank cards into the scrunchie. There’s nothing better than your favorite hair accessory with a pocket inside. They are available in over 25 different colors and textures. If requested, I am always willing to make a custom size if the three differ from what the customer wants. I carry plus size options in many clothing items. We just contracted with Sydney’s Closet, a plus size-only formal wear company unlike any other formal company in the Midwest. We will be carrying sizes between 14-32 in many of their dresses because glam should come in all shapes and sizes, not just petite. Linny J’s closet also carries footwear of all styles. One service I plan to start offering is personal shopping and styling. If a customer has an idea of something they want and can’t find it, they have to send a request in, and I will search until I find what they’re looking for. Because who has time to scour the internet for hours looking for a specific dress or style that isn’t available in most places? I am proud of the diversity of clothing we offer and even more proud of this coming formal season. I will be able to provide the significant girl population with the same glam looks that petite girls have had access to their entire lives. And we offer free shipping on aLL orders!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Taking care of those around you is important, but taking care of yourself is the foundation for building something worth fighting for.
