Meet Leah Krieger of Brookside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Krieger.

Leah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After working for a decade in corporate jobs, I realized I could no longer ignore my passion for helping others and went back to school at UMKC to become a mental health therapist. During grad school, I interned at a local domestic violence shelter here in KC, and it lit a fire inside of me. After graduation, I continued to work at domestic violence shelters in KC for 5 years, specializing in trauma, crisis intervention work, female empowerment, and family systems. Once I had my children, I transitioned into my own private practice, and have proudly owned LKCounseling, LLC for six years.

In private practice, I initially specialized in general mental health, trauma, and empowerment. My curiosity continued to get the best of me, and I found myself connecting with my Clients on topics that the world had made them feel shameful about, and topics that others may be afraid to discuss. After a year in private practice, I began to focus in on how all of my training, life experiences, and Client work intersected with sex and intimacy. I went back to school to receive specialized training in Sex Therapy, and since 2023 I have been helping Clients as a Certified Sex Therapist. I bring to the therapy room a huge personal catalog of life experiences, curiosity, continuous training, and respect to help my Clients through anything they may be experiencing, and make sure that intimacy and sexuality are topics that are centered in our therapy journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Um, no. It has not been smooth! And I am honestly glad it hasn’t been, because each time I have hit a bump it has led to growth.

I opened LKCounseling, LLC in September 2019. By March 2020, we were in COVID lockdown. My therapy practice and interventions were all set up for a brick and mortar environment. I quickly got a crash course in virtual therapy while also figuring out how to hold space for experiences that my Clients and I were all experiencing at the same time. No amount of graduate school or supervision can prepare you for that!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I meet with individuals and couples over the age of 18 in person or virtually to provide them with bespoke mental health services. I specialize in intimacy, sex, trauma, empowerment, and life transitions. I am known for being real, warm, humble, and unafraid.

I am proud of who I am and how I show up with my Clients. Therapy is a relationship. I am a human being that has flaws and is fallible. I make sure to let my Clients know that yes, I have specialized training and geek out on continued learning, but really we are just humans coming together to explore, create meaning, and heal. I am also proud of the affirming and inclusive nature of my practice, everyone is welcome.

I think what makes me special is the intersections I hold. I am a mom to 3 young kids. I am a woman who has worked in corporate America and knows the grind. I have a deep understanding of topics that are not considered mainstream (domestic violence, abuse, infidelity, sex). I have gone through my own trauma. The complexities that I hold are ones that I bring to my work.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Anytime I got to be with my Grammy. She was the absolute best.
