Meet Kristin Malfer of Malfer & Associates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Malfer.

Kristin Malfer

Hi Kristin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Atlanta, GA, attended high school in Memphis, TN, and attended Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. After college, I followed my parents to Kansas City, where I worked in the Hallbrook Country Club pro shop. One of the club members recruited me away to sell advertising for New Homes Journal magazine and to help him with a new startup. He hired me to sell builders’ and developers’ websites. I had no idea what “www” even meant. I soon married a builder, left sales, and began pursuing my passion for interior design by designing model homes and learning the business of new home construction. Later, I divorced, became a single mom, and needed a job. I channeled my knowledge from my advertising sales career and the immense amount of experience I gained from calling on builders and developers to lead me to my first job in real estate as an onsite sales agent at Siena of Leawood. That was 23 years ago, and I haven’t looked back. Loving my real estate career led me to share my passion with others by building the team of 19 that I have today.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No road is ever smooth, but the curves and bumps are how we learn and grow! When I started in the real estate business, I had $20 to my name and needed to figure out how to expand my business. I knew that hustle, hard work, and a never-give-up attitude were my only options for giving it my best shot. I began establishing new relationships – many of which are still the foundation of my business today. Slowly but surely, my efforts paid off. It was like someone plugged me into a wall. It was electric. Soon after getting into real estate, I met Mr. Wonderful and remarried. A few years later, my husband suggested that I hire an assistant and possibly try to train others so that I could scale the business. In 2008, at the height of the recession, my team began. Builders were going bankrupt, foreclosures were at an all-time high, and homes were sitting for sale on the market for sometimes months and months. Instead of giving up, I dug in harder and poured all our resources into my business. By the end of 2009, the business had doubled, and I have never looked back. I have struggled with various aspects of running a team, but I always try to learn from the failures and get better, not bitter! I never look back; I’m not going that way.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Malfer & Associates?
My business is built on offering our clients the highest level of service. Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest stresses in anyone’s life. Our goal is to do whatever it takes to help lessen that stress. There is no task too small that I won’t help with. I was out shoveling a seller’s driveway today.

What do you specialize in/what are you known for?
My team is very diverse in geographic areas as well as price ranges. Big or small, we sell them all. My expertise is handling upper-bracket homes.

What sets you apart from others?
Well, we can handle anything! Our relationships and resources enable us to provide a white-glove experience. We offer a concierge service approach for real estate. I believe in going the extra mile to allow our clients to obtain what they want. I kept my design business open to pass my discounts to buyers who wish to change their new homes or for sellers needing to update their homes before listing. We have a vetted contractor list available to our clients that can be used for simple things like paint selections, countertops, carpet, staging, or a complete remodel. Going the extra mile makes a difference. Sometimes, we take a barking dog for a ride while a showing takes place or even today, I shoveled the driveway of an elderly client so that our photographer could safely transport her equipment.

What are you most proud of brand-wise?
Reputation. Our brand represents the highest quality real estate experience in town. Other agents truly enjoy working with us. They appreciate how we handle our business. We have an outstanding reputation for being ethical, knowledgeable, professional, and fun to work with! My agents and staff all represent these ideals; I am very proud.

What do you want our readers to know about your brand, offerings, services, etc?
We have offices in three Kansas City locations, allowing us to better serve buyers and sellers from all over the metro area. Through the power of our brokerage, COMPASS, we are partners in a nationwide network of outstanding agents. We are relocation specialists and can assist our clients anywhere nationwide.

How do you define success?
I have found a profession that fulfills me, excites me for each new day, and allows me to impact others positively. That is my definition of success.
