Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Brumm.
Hi Kristin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved to bake and started experimenting with making more creative designs back in 2019. When the pandemic hit and we were spending more time indoors, I devoted more time to working on more intricate pie crust designs. Some of those designs began drawing attention on Instagram, and people reached out wanting to buy specialty pie designs. I opened Pie Goddess, a home bakery, in late 2020.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been very smooth. Since I work from home, I keep my overhead low and can control the flow of sales. I work full time in the nonprofit sector, so this is a small side business for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Pie Goddess is known for pies with creative crust designs. I make pie tops with messages or images or patterns. The visual nature of the pies has helped me gain an audience on Instagram. Some of my designs are playful, such as a dolphin jumping out of the waves, and some reflect the social activist in me.
Though I work in finance, I’ve always had a strong creative streak. I’m happiest when I’m creating something new, whether it’s a pie design, a piece of writing or a needlework sampler. I get lost in the work and feel a deep contentment. I believe creative expression nurtures our bodies and souls.
Though I’ve been working on pie designs for many years now, I’m still constantly learning. Pie dough is not the easiest medium to work with. It’s finicky and has to be just the right texture and temperature. Not all my designs work out. Sometimes I’ll put a particular border on a pie, then decide it doesn’t look right and try several other variations until I find something I like. But it’s all part of the fun.
I’ve been doing fewer bake sales recently and more creating. I found that the production side of the business was less enjoyable than the designing. Moving forward, I will be focusing more time on creating new designs just for fun.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Though I’m not baking as much as I was a few years ago, I still have occasional sales, mostly for holidays. You can find my designs and sales announcements on Instagram or Facebook.
