Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Vaca.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had artistic abilities since I was a kid, but I had never really known exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I hadn’t discovered my calling yet and was working retail full time. My boyfriend at the time owned a tattoo shop and had explained to me the process of microblading and cosmetic tattooing. He told me that he thought I would be great at it and that he would pay for a workshop if I agreed to take it. I didn’t think that it would be something I’d be good at but I agreed to take the workshop.
I ended up catching on really quickly and falling in love with the process so I decided I would continue my education and start an apprenticeship for a tattoo license. This is one of the best things I could have done for myself and it changed my life completely. I was eventually able to quit my job and focus all of my time on taking new clients for microblading. This was the first time in my life I had ever felt financially stable and it was a risk I would have never taken on my own.
At the end of my apprenticeship, 1 week before my license came in the mail, my boyfriend passed away in his sleep. This was by far the hardest experience of my life and I knew I wanted to keep his tattoo business alive in my own way.
I reopened the shop in March of 2018 and I now have 3 amazing female artists who specialize in making women feel beautiful!
I am so incredibly grateful for the Cosmetic Tattoo business I have today and I would be nowhere without the push and support I had from my late boyfriend, Joseph Hoppert. I am so lucky to have found my calling in life and I will continue to strive to be a better artist than I was yesterday.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The process was anything but smooth. I had to grieve, pack up a house, get a business license, help pick out funeral arrangements, reschedule clients, schedule an inspection, open a new business, and grieve again all at the same time. But I did it and here I am!
Tell us more about Perspective Ink.
I personally specialize in cosmetic tattooing, or permanent makeup, but I spend 90% of my time tattooing eyebrows. I have been tattooing for almost 5 years now and microblading has kept my schedule booked out 3-5 months at a time for almost 4 consecutive years. I have recently been tattooing eyeliner more frequently and look forward to introducing lip blushing (tattooing) in the near future! I also have 3 other amazing artists who have trained under me and now specialize in lash extensions and cosmetic tattooing as well. We hope to one day be able to offer medical tattooing such as areola reconstruction tattooing for breast cancer patients, and scalp micropigmentation. We are consistently learning new things every single day and are always looking for opportunities to further our education. So be on the look out!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you think you have nothing more to learn, you have already failed. Don’t limit yourself by thinking you have mastered your skills!
