Meet Kayla Moser of Dough Drop Cookies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Moser.

Hi Kayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a passion for baking and experimenting with new ideas and flavors. A few years ago, I was in a job I didn’t enjoy and found myself really struggling. My boyfriend encouraged me to pursue something I did love and suggested I turn my cookie baking into something more. Everyone had always raved about my cookies, and he believed it was an idea that could work. His encouragement lit a fire in me, and I instantly dove in and began planning an entire business. I felt excited, motivated, and more like myself again. From the beginning, I knew I’d need to start from home, but I dreamed of eventually moving into a commercial kitchen and, one day, having my own bakery. I officially launched Dough Drop Cookies and was blown away by the support I received from friends and family. Their enthusiasm gave me the push to keep going. For a while, I searched for a commercial kitchen but couldn’t find anything within my budget or close enough to be practical. I ended up pausing the search, until one day a few months later, I decided to give it one last try. That’s when I discovered the Mid-Continent Public Library’s new location on Green Hills Road, which had just opened a Culinary Center designed to support food entrepreneurs. It was close to me and exactly what I was looking for, and I was so excited that I applied right away. When I was accepted into the program, it truly felt like it was meant to be and everything started falling in place. Since then, the Culinary Center has been our home base. It’s where we make our cookies and also serves as the “storefront” for customer pickups. I love the space, staff, and the supportive environment they’ve created. It’s been such a big part of Dough Drop Cookies’ growth, and I’m incredibly grateful for how far things have come, and so excited for where it’s all headed!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, but I don’t think that’s unusual when you’re starting something from scratch, especially something you’ve never done before. Learning to promote Dough Drop Cookies consistently while juggling a full-time job has been one of my biggest challenges. It’s tough to stay on top of social media, marketing, and all the behind-the-scenes work when your day is already full. Large events can be tricky, too. I can’t always rely on friends and family to help out – they already do so much – and doing everything alone isn’t always realistic. I’ve had to get better at planning ahead and accepting that things won’t always go perfectly. There have definitely been moments when I’ve questioned whether I can keep it all going, but I’m lucky to have a strong support system behind me. It hasn’t been a smooth road, but each challenge has taught me that things always work out, and I learn something new along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m the owner and baker behind Dough Drop Cookies, a small cookie business based in Kansas City. We make large, chewy drop cookies with a rotating menu that features seasonal flavors alongside classic favorites. I really enjoy coming up with fun and creative flavors, especially around the holidays, to give people something new and exciting to try. What I’m probably best known for is the variety. There is always something different on the menu, whether it is a cozy fall flavor like apple cider donut or a themed holiday box. I love making cookies that feel fun, nostalgic, and a little unexpected. When I started Dough Drop Cookies, I had never run a business like this before, so seeing how far it has come has been incredibly meaningful and something I’m really proud of. What began as an idea has grown into something real, and it’s been so rewarding to watch people get excited about the flavors we create. One of my favorite things is when someone discovers us for the first time and then comes back to order again. That kind of connection means so much to me. Along the way, I have met many amazing people, and some customers have even become friends. Building those relationships has been one of the most fulfilling parts of this journey. What sets Dough Drop Cookies apart is the care and creativity that goes into every detail, from the flavors to the packaging to the overall experience. I want people to feel a little spark of excitement when they see a fun flavor, and hopefully come back for more.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next five to ten years, I think the food industry will see a stronger focus on clean, transparent ingredients, as consumers increasingly want to know what’s in their food and where it comes from. Social media will continue to be a major way small businesses engage with customers and build loyal followings. I also expect to see more innovation with flavors and products, as people look for new and exciting experiences. Overall, the industry will likely become more community-oriented and quality-driven, moving away from mass production to focus on small businesses, meaningful connections, and craftsmanship.
