Meet Jill Phillips of Strategic SOULutions/Jill Phillips Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Phillips.

Hi Jill, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
“I believe that no matter how happy we are or appear to be, no matter how much we’ve survived or accomplished, we sense there is more. We feel a calling of our unfulfilled potential- and only the courageous go to seek. The possibility and potential of taking your life from surviving to thriving is alluring. It is exciting that there’s a process that, if integrated and practiced, everyone has an opportunity to tap into their greatness.”

Everyone has a unique story that shapes them. My story, and now my mission, has been about navigating change, or as I like to say, “Learning to ride the waves of life.”

Growing up, my family moved several times due to my dad’s career, which made me “the new girl” when all I wanted was to blend in. The “new girl” phenomenon would follow me, but as I’ve learned, it’s something everyone experiences that we call change. It’s inevitable, and how we respond holds the power of our life fulfillment, measure of joy, our impact, and success.

I’ve always been fascinated with people- the human psyche and personal development. I wanted to know why some people seem to hit all of the green lights and others remain stuck without fulfilling their potential. In school, I pursued Psychology but found the Freudian Therapy Route wasn’t a fit for me. While therapy has its place, I was interested in working with motivated people in pursuit of greatness. Coaching and positive psychology emerged after I graduated with a degree in Communication Disorders with extensive studies in psychology and kinesiology. It would only be later in life that I would connect the dots in my studies of interest with the mind, body and human spirit and integrate elements of that into what I do today.

The other route of interest was marketing. I watched so many people with visions, ideas and talent that went by the wayside because they didn’t know how to get their genius out into the world.

A decade passed before I was introduced to the concept of coaching. It sounded a little fluffy, but I was curious. I was at a point in my life where I had survived a painful divorce, being a single mom of three and working a few jobs to make ends meet. Eventually, I remarried a widower and instantly became the Brady Bunch navigating new waters without a manual.

Intrigued (and somewhat reluctant), I decided to work with a coach to navigate my new life. Although a good life, the pressures (real and self-imposed) became insurmountable. A few sessions in, I knew that coaching was not only what I needed but was my mission forward. All the dots began to connect and I began training right away. Today I am entering my eighth year in coaching and know this is a skillset and mission I will carry for the rest of my life.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say I’ve overcome the challenges, but I intentionally work to manage them. Prioritizing self-care is essential so I can have the energy to serve and be present in all the moving areas of my life and business.  At the top of this list is my family and five active kids who mean so much to me. My friendships and having fun are also essentials I plug into my calendar. Being an ambitious woman with a mission, I also have to discipline my active visionary brain by training it when to switch on and off.

In my business, like most entrepreneurs, I set out to provide a service. As I grew, I realized service and running a business require two separate skill sets. My mission and vision are strong, but a vision without action is a hallucination (Japanese proverb).  I’ve learned that your business will only grow as much as you do, so it requires continual personal and professional coaching and development. I believe the two greatest challenges are getting in our own way (FEAR), and having the right people in place to help you go further, faster.  As I’ve grown, I’ve had to step out of my comfort zone, address my fears, and take action. Each new level has a new devil (new fears), so navigating change and dealing with feelings of imposter syndrome and failure has to be something I actively address.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
There are five types of important people to have in life: A mentor, a real friend, a primary companion, a peer group, and a coach. All of these are valuable to support you on your path. I’ve been fortunate to create and cultivate all of these relationships in my life. As someone who serves others, it’s important to be open to receive support as well.
