Meet Jill Burrow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Burrow.

Hi Jill, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I first started to realize my calling after venturing into a few different avenues of creativity. I went to college for music and then realized it wasn’t something I wanted to do longterm so I explored the idea of making things with my hands. I started working with ceramics and textiles just to exercise my creativity. In the process of setting up a photoshoot to capture my products with my partner, who had been a photographer/videographer for years, a seed was planted in my mind.

I began to wonder what it would be like to create sets and get behind the camera. From there, I really started understanding my eye for creativity within the context of photography/videography. For the last two and a half years, I’ve been fully immersed in my world of visuals.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been anything but smooth! One of the things I struggled with most was becoming a mom during the beginning of this process. The lack of sleep and complex world of changing my focus from myself to another small human was very challenging. Not only was it hard to find the time to explore my creativity, at the time we were majorly struggling financially so I felt like every step toward my creative calling was a huge leap.

Every time I created a set to photograph in order to develop my portfolio was a risk. I also felt quite a bit of opposition from my community at the time. I was told that a creative career would be impossible to achieve. So in many ways, I felt that my only hope to really see this through to fruition was my own confidence, passion, and hard work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a set designer, photographer, and videographer! I specialize in a sort of whimsical, poetic visual narrative. I use a lot of surrealism in my work to really catch the eye of the viewer. I have been known for using natural elements to tell my story such as food, flowers, and nature and while I have largely created still-life style imagery I am also very passionate about editorial work. Some projects I have done that I am extremely proud of are my underwater picnics and I recently created and curated 3 full sets for Chrissy Teigen at her home in LA in May for her new summer cookware collection. That was a wild and truly remarkable experience.

Any big plans?
I am starting to feel like I am truly getting into the groove of my work and the process of making it a career. Moving forward I am planning to continue growing and expanding my work. I have recently worked with some major international brands to bring their vision for their brand to life and I plan to keep pressing into this work. I would love to continue working with small businesses and established businesses and brands alike!
