Meet Jessica Pointer of Messy’s

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Pointer.

Jessica , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for 17 years, and for most of that time I did what many stylists do — traditional hair color and constant exposure to chemicals I didn’t think twice about.

Until my body did.

I began having respiratory issues that forced me to ask a hard question: How can I keep doing what I love without continuous harm to my health? I wanted to do whatever I could to continue to serve as a hairdresser – it’s part of who I am. So instead, I changed everything about how I did it.

That turning point is what rebirthed Messy’s.

I dove deep into plant-based hair color, herbal pigments, and a completely different approach to salon services. What started as a personal necessity quickly became a professional calling. I realized this wasn’t just better for me – it was better for my clients, better for the air we breathe, and better for the future of our industry.

Today, Messy’s is Kansas City’s 100% plant color salon. Every color service comes from plants!

The thing that felt like might put an end a career I love, provided more purpose, joy & alignment to my life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not smooth road!

Transitioning to plant-based color meant stepping into the unknown. I had to unlearn years of training and relearn an entirely different approach to hair, chemistry, timing, and expectations. There was a steep learning curve, a lot of trial and error.

There were also financial & emotional challenges as many long time clients had to find a new colorist – while plant color is amazing, it is not for everyone.

Educating people on why plant color works and why it’s worth the process became part of every appointment.

These struggles shaped Messy’s to be clearer about my mission. It has been an exciting & fulfilling journey, which thankfully balanced out all the stress.

As you know, we’re big fans of Messy’s . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Messy’s is a Kansas City salon built around one core focus: Non-toxic, 100% plant-based hair color.

After nearly two decades in the beauty industry, I created this space out of necessity and conviction when I could no longer ignore how traditional color was affecting my health. What started as a personal pivot became a full redefinition of my work.

I specialize in custom cuts & plant color services that support both hair health and overall well-being. This is not a “clean alternative” version of traditional color, it is an entirely different system rooted in plants, patience, and process.

I spend a lot of time guiding clients through what is realistic, what to expect, and how their hair will evolve through the process.

It attracts people who are tired of the toxicity that comes from synthetic color. I serve many clients who are cancer survivors, those with autoimmune issues & health conscious.
It’s for people who are living the lifestyle of healing. However, some people just love the results. (Shot out to my OG clients for sticking with me).

Beyond hair services, I also offer permanent jewlery. It’s a connection you can wear everyday & create a special memory with who sat beside you. I love it for mother/daughter, sisters, friends & all bonded relationships.

It is very gratifying & not just a piece of jewelry, it’s the memories you make and keep with you.

I am most proud of is the relationships I have built with my clients & all of the wonderful people I’ve been able to meet. My clients are the absolute BEST & many have been with me from the beginning. It’s very humbling.

I am also proud & thankful that I can offer non toxic hair products & color to people who are on a healing journey or for those who just want to eliminate one less toxic thing in their lives.

Oftentimes when health issues arise, there’s a myriad of changes one must make if you want to attack the root cause(s). Haircolor is one of them. We can now feel safe to breathe at a salon!

I am not sure if God intended for henna, cassia & indigo plants to be used for hair color, but I am always amazed at the beautiful results I see with His creation! I am often in awe of the results from plant color – literally mind blowing. Synthetic color could never duplicate the intricate, blendy, unique result one can get from plant color.

At its core, Messy’s is about letting go of perfect & embracing what’s real. Natural beauty without the pressure. Lived in hair.

Intentional choices & a more effortless way of showing up for yourself while being a light for others. Less perfect. More real.

#Livelifemessy is my tagline & is a reminder that beauty doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. It’s about embracing the process & feeling good in your own skin (and hair)

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
The most life-changing book has been the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. I cannot begin to put into words how much it’s impacted my life & that of my kids.

I think I have read a chapter a day for over 25 years! “Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom.”
