Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Davis.
Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I knew from the age of 6 years old I was going to be a Hairstylist. At 13 years old, I gave my 8-year-old sister her first perm and was in love. In 1993, I began beauty school at the Jones School in Raytown. Within 4 months of school, I received an offer to be a receptionist in the free-standing salon in Lee’s Summit. I learned much from each journey, from the Jones Store to Beauty Brands, Great Clips, and other free-standing salons. It was always a struggle financially working for someone else. I have a different thought process when It comes to running a salon. The Bonus of being an owner is choosing everything from the name to the decor. The money will follow if you play your cards right and care for your staff. Owners are not supposed to make money hand over fist off the broken backs of their stylists. It’s hard for an owner to provide benefits, so I had a different idea. Something that would show staff they are a priority and greatly appreciative of their hard work. After 6 months, you receive 1 week of no rent (stylist form of vacation). It’s so hard to be unpaid and still pay salon bills. After 18 months, it goes up to 2 weeks with no rent. When you are with me for 5 years, you are vested and get 3 weeks of no rent. I built my salon in a single suite and $800 to work with 1 bowl, 1 chair, and a little old me. Uniquely Twisted Salon was born on April 1, 2019. When I reached my 3rd year, I was ready to try expanding next door to a double suite. I added a clothing section because people have fashion issues, and only some people like to shop online. 1 renter Christa Welch, who is Fantastic! One of the things I have learned from my renter is that being an older stylist before social media takes a lot more work to get started. We are not just stylists. We are social media influencers, we are videographers, and we are marketing managers and receptionists. Suppose you build a team of stylists with all different skills, everyone is vested and feels like a part of the team and family. She had never had anyone Advertise for her. I make videos all the time showing off her skills. She is not a competition. She is an asset with different skills. Once my team is built, I would love to have a location where I can have 1 everyone amazing in the same location—Esthetician, Tattoo artist, massage therapist, and so on. We will have a yearly trip to Relax, Idea Building, and Appreciation trip for my employees if I take care of them. They will take care of me. I have my new goals set for 2024 and am Building my team of amazing stylists and lots of education! We even discussed having education classes for the customers. From braiding to blowouts. Are you even shampooing your hair correctly? The possibilities are endless, and I am excited for the next year.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Finding stylists to rent that still need to be in a salon or are built enough to switch to commission. Many stylists have retired or yet to get a proper education during COVID-19. They have struggled with clients since COVID-19, and unfortunately, social media makes them think they can have anything they want with no boundaries. Science says otherwise. There are limits to what we can do to maintain the integrity of the hair. Last-minute cancellations are 100% an issue for which a nation of stylists is trying to get boundaries in place.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have many skill levels that I have accomplished over the years. I love color in every way, shape, or form. You can achieve a huge life-altering change or a little pop of color. It changes your mood and your smile. Then, in 1998, I worked for Lewis Hair Centers in Kansas, where I learned about Hair Pieces. It was life-changing. I began working with cancer patients, and now I am working with Gastro bypass patients. The patients go through all the work to lose weight. I am trying to remain healthy and follow the rules to the letter, and I still have massive hair loss. Which sadly still horribly affects their self-esteem in a negative way versus a positive way. Why can’t they have not only beautiful hair but also easy-to-maintain and affordable hair? You can have a different look with a wig whenever you want. The consultation is to get styling ideas and colors. I have a local woman named Nicole Kistner from whom I order wigs so she can help me get more specific ones for clients. I wear wigs all the time. When someone stops me to tell me they love my hair. I smile, say Thank you, and hand them my wig card. I cut these wigs, style them synthetic wigs, and personalize them.
We’d like to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I believe in good Karma, so as far as my building management goes, I am very blessed with my location. No one wants to pay rent, but if I have to, I know they have been amazing. April 1, 2024, is my 5yr anniversary! Even if I expand more, It will be with this management company. I am also Blessed to have my renter, Christa Welch, going on 6 months. I have learned a lot from her already. We will continue to learn and encourage each other. I have not had any bad luck or learned anything that has led me to this point. It serves a purpose for growth.
