Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jay Goodbinder.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story is very similar to the story and health journey of most of my patients. I was chronically ill, suffering from psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis all over my body. My whole goal for becoming a doctor was to learn how to cure myself because medicine had been failing me. I was on six medications by the age of 23 and now at the age of 42, I do not take any medications. I feel great and all my patients can feel my passion for what we’re doing here at The Epigenetics Healing Center.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I graduated from school, I immediately got a job at a high-volume neuropathy clinic. It was almost all Medicare based and I wasn’t allowed to do anything but adjust people as fast as possible and move them through. Because Medicare only covers certain things, the practice would run on whatever Medicare reimbursed for the bests. There was no regard for other ways to help patients. When my first son was born, I couldn’t let him see me working in an environment like that and in a career I wasn’t passionate about. I decided to quit that week with a new baby, even though I was the sole breadwinner. My wife said she believed in me and she knew I would make anything work as long as I was passionate about it. I wanted to be a functional medicine doctor that didn’t rely on insurance and a great one that always did what was right for the patient. Our first big hurdle was the initial cost of starting my practice. We had to take out some loans and initially just relied on faith that everything would be ok. The next struggle arose when I started refusing to adjust. Adjusting was not my passion and was not the vision I had for what I wanted my clinic to be! During this transition, from adjustments and functional medicine to purely functional medicine, I almost went out of practice. I knew if I wanted to achieve success for what I was passionate about, I needed help. This was around the time my mentor came into my life. He was tough but believed in me and insisted that I start sharing my knowledge with others and showing people the science behind their health. I was uncomfortable presenting due to finances but I did them anyway. I was willing to be uncomfortable and able to grow as a person and my practice started to experience that same growth. Within four months of working with my mentor, my practice became very successful and I was able to pursue my passion of helping patients.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
To date, my biggest mentor is Charlie Webb. He is a successful entrepreneur himself and really just gave me a kick in the backside which was the extra push I needed to go speak and let people know that there’s a different way to do things. He basically said, ‘you know what you’re saying, you know the science of things, people are gonna be drawn to that and they’re going to come to your practice.’ During my journey he reminded me of the importance of investing in myself, even when money might have been tight. I’ll never forget the day he bluntly said, ‘you are going to pay to host a speaking event and you’re doing it this week and remember, you will be fine.’ So I did and the rest is history.
