Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Hayse.
Hi Jason, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My dad and I started this company in 2007 — he as a cabinet maker and construction expert and I as a designer. We set out to build new homes, though when the housing market crashed in 2008, we switched gears to renovating. We wanted to offer much more than just “finishing a basement” or “redoing a kitchen.”
While partnering with some of the most talented tradespeople in the city to renovate existing and build new home spaces, we listen carefully to how the homeowners want to use the space and thoughtfully design the new space in the best way that makes sense for the family.
Further, with extensive experience in restoring historic homes, we bring to all of our projects a commitment to honor the home’s inherent character and carry that through all of the new spaces.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Beginning with the historic housing market crash of 2008, Sustained Homes has had to pivot throughout its 15 years in business. Starting as spec home builders in 2006, we had to reset our sights on residential renovation when the 2008 crisis hit. Likewise, in the current climate of the Covid pandemic, we have had to (and continue to) make changes to the way we manage projects considering material price increases, delivery delays, and labor shortages.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sustained Homes Building & Design, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Sustained Homes wins on three major points: 1) Design, 2) Project Management and 3) Construction. Sustained Homes is known for thoughtful design and commitment to quality in building and renovating new spaces.
Our projects are most successful when we start with designing the new space (e.g. basement, kitchen, master suite) according to how it will best suit the needs of the homeowners and family, and follow that up with managing the renovation project from start to finish, bringing in the best tradespeople to complete construction — framers, trim carpenters, drywall crew, electricians, plumbers, painters, HVAC contractors.
We design and custom build our own cabinetry, using the finest materials and best hardware, to ensure it will last for generations in the home. As our standard, we use materials and finishes that are steps above “builder’s grade.” We are mindful and respectful of our clients’ budgets while making sure the materials we use will last long after we have cleaned up and left the project.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
We have learned that communication is absolutely essential to a successful project and client relationship. Besides having all details finalized before we even step foot on the project site for Demo Day, we make sure to communicate with the homeowners on a daily basis so they know what to expect each day.
We understand that as important it is to manage the constant goings-on of the project, it is equally important to manage expectations.
