Meet Jasmine Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Jones.

Hi Jasmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’ve always enjoyed writing and talking about things that I found interesting. When I was younger, my mom bought me a journal and I would write stories or just random thoughts. I had no idea that it would lead to me writing for my own website or having my own radio show.

I love listening to the radio, so when I was asked to be a guest for a program on KKFI back in 2015, it was a no-brainer. From there, I started volunteering for the same show I was formerly a guest on and the host ( Donna Wolfe) was nice enough to take me under her wing and teach me everything I know now about radio and how to run a show.

Fast forward to the present day, and I host a show called “Next Step Forward.” The show highlights millennials in the KC metro that are using their businesses, talents, activism, etc. to promote positivity in the community. It airs every 1st Thursday of the month at 7pm on 90.1fm KKFI.  The show has allowed me to feed into my curiosity of people and life in general, but also talk about subjects that are educational, yet entertaining.

In 2019, I decided to go back to school to get a 2nd bachelor’s degree in journalism. I created my website (thejazzyreview.com) in 2020. The idea for the website had been bouncing around in my head for a long time, but I put it off until I was forced to do a senior project for class. That pushed me to really think about what I wanted to do with the site and how I wanted to present my writing to the world.

It is an entertainment website where I give my take on popular shows and celebrity news stories. It’s been a learning experience, but it’s something I truly enjoy and want to make a career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If it were easy everyone would be doing it, right? Lol.

There definitely have been some struggles, mainly just trying to balance everything. I work full time and run my show and my website by myself, so it can be challenging at times to figure out how to do it all. It has been quite the learning experience of time management, but it has helped me grow.

Honestly, I think the biggest struggle is getting out of my own way. Whew. Getting past the fear of “putting myself out there” and promoting my work has been hard, but I’m making a daily effort to fight the fear.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a radio host and entertainment journalist. I interview millennials in the KC metro for my radio show and I also write for my entertainment news site.

What I’m most proud of is being able to connect with others and create an environment where people feel safe to be themselves. When you listen to my show or read my articles, I talk to my guest and my readers as if we’ve known each other for years.

I also think that’s what sets me apart is that I am able to connect with you where you feel like you’re a part of the conversation, whether it’s through the airwaves or in written form.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Let go of fear!! Whew child, this is definitely something I’m still working on, but fear can keep you from doing what you’re really called to do. Fear of the unknown, fear of what people will think or say, fear of failure. All of it!! I’m learning to lean more into my faith than into my fears.
