Meet Jamie Squire of SquirePhoto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Squire.

Hi Jamie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I went to college at Emory University and graduated in 1995, the year before the Olympics in Atlanta. As a sports photographer, it was always my goal to photograph the Olympics. I joined a company called Allsport and shot my first Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. In 1998 Allsport became a part of Getty Images. I have worked at Getty ever since and my job is to travel and cover the world’s top sports events. I have been privileged have covered 12 Olympic Games, countless World Series’, Super Bowls, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals, NCAA Final Fours, and all four major golf tournaments among a myriad of other events. I have shot on assignment for editorial clients such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, ESPN Magazine, Time, and Sports Illustrated. I have also completed commercial and advertising work for major corporations including Coca Cola, Nike, Reebok, and USA Network.
After spending time in Los Angeles, New York City and Washington, DC, I moved to Kansas City in 2006. Since then I have continued to travel as well as cover local events including all the pro and college teams.
In 2006 I also started shooting portraits, weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and for corporations locally in Kansas City.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am fortunate that my professional journey has been a relatively smooth one. I was given an opportunity very early and was able to turn it into a career. I have traveled the world while continuing to learn along the way and expand my skillset. Working for a company is a lot different than being a freelancer. I don’t always have control over my assignments or my schedule, but I also don’t have to worry as much about when the next paycheck will come in. However, my job requires a lot of travel. I am constantly challenged with trying to maintain a balance between work and home life. I am not always home for family engagements or milestones, but, sometimes, I travel with the family and can bring them places we ordinarily would not get to go.

When i shoot outside of my day job, I really am able challenge myself. I am constantly pursuing new techniques or trying to become better at things like photoshop. I greatly enjoy getting to know new people and being involved in happy and positive situations.

As you know, we’re big fans of SquirePhoto. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I shoot sports as my day job. However, I came up as a wedding photographer and was fortunate enough to work with three legends in the industry. I spent summers between college years working with Monte Zucker and Clay Blackmore. Monte and Clay were known in the industry for their classical style pf posed portraiture. They held workshops and were instructors at all the main conventions at which people would come to learn their style. During school I worked with Denis Reggie, a celebrity and society wedding photographer who literally started the wedding photojournalism approach that so many of us now use today. Denis counts clients like Vera Wang, Tory Burch, Mariah Carey, James Taylor, and the Kennedy family among the many others he has photographed. The two styles couldn’t be more opposite from each other.

Through my personal work, I am able to employ both approaches when the situation calls for it. Aside from the skills I learned, most importantly, I learned how to interact with people. The soft skills of being able to put subjects at ease while trying to solve a complex lighting situations and other logistics have helped me become successful.

I can only take a handful of assignments each year outside my sports obligations so I have to be super selective about which ones I can do. I am able to capture family portraits, weddings, seniors and events only when it fits my schedule. But, these assignments are so important to me because I am passionate about being able to capture the fleeting moments that will never come again. I try to take as many as I can, but only if I can give them all my attention.

What matters most to you?
I am a people pleaser. What matters most to me is that my clients are happy. When my clients look at moments I have captured, whether it be on the sports field or of their family, and tell me I nailed it, I am most fulfilled.
