Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalen Hinnen.
Hi Jalen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2019 I started a TikTok account @curls.with.jay where I posted tutorials and tips for anyone with curly or wavy hair. It quickly gained a lot of traction and I was helping so many people embrace their natural texture for the first time. This led me to cosmetology school, which led me to Kansas City to become a curl specialist in 2024.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was able to build my clientele pretty fast because there is such a need for curly hair experts.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in cutting and coloring curly hair. I’m proud to share that I am moving my business to a salon suite in Lenexa. This is a huge step for me and my business. I am so grateful to have a busy schedule that allows me to take this next step.
I feel like my attention to education sets me apart from other stylists, and even other curl specialists. Since I started my TikTok in 2019, my focus has always been education. My goal is to help clients achieve beautiful curls at home and teach them sustainable ways to care for their hair. I hope that every client takes away at least one new helpful tip from each appointment with me, whether it’s their first appointment or their hundredth appointment.
How do you think about happiness?
My family makes me happy. I love doing hair because it gives me the ability to be home with my two sons and also do work that I love without feeling like either is a sacrifice to the other.
