Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Musick.
Hi Heather, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Heather, an MLO (mortgage loan originator) licensed in MO, KS, OK, TX, and IL and currently working on FL, CO, and HI to add to the list! I’ve been in the mortgage business since 2005 and self-generating 100% for about 2 years. When I’m not working, I’m either at the gym or courtside watching my girls play volleyball and cheer, and I love to binge a good Netflix reality dating show! I’m a divorced, single mama of 2 girls (14 and 8), both going on 21 😉 I’m a dog mom, a cat mom, and a girl mom.
I got my first taste of the mortgage business when I worked at Capital Federal as a teller and was asked to transition to mortgage processing. I had never purchased a home, dealt with a home loan, or the home-buying process, but I became hooked!
In 2018 as the financial aid manager for my location, I walked away due to several life changes and honestly did not know where I would go or end up. I ventured to a few different banks and mortgage companies over the next few years before the crash of ’08 led to me being laid off when the company shut down, and at that point, I took a different route for a while. I spent the next 10 years working in higher education. I spent a few months unemployed, discovering myself and figuring out what I could, and landed a position as a loan officer assistant (LOA) to a gentleman who taught me the ropes and a side of the mortgage business I had never seen before.
After years of being an LOA, I decided I wanted more and got licensed to start self-producing. I was in a stagnant place, and I wanted to grow and had found a niche in the industry by working with investors; the company I was with at the time did not cater to that clientele, and I needed to move. I continued to spend some time at the company while building up my confidence, knowledge, and client base before having to make some hard decisions. In 2022 I moved to the company I’m currently with, USA Mortgage, and it’s been the best move for my career. I was scared, to be honest, to leave the safety net I was under and did not know if I had it in me to be 100% self-generating of leads and still be able to provide for my family but let me tell you, I’m not sure if anyone works harder than a woman with no choice but to succeed!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Ha! Smooth? What’s that? Like almost everyone else’s, my journey has been nothing but easy, but it would not be worth it if it were easy. I had my first child young, was married, and a mom by 22, and just went through the motions. I worked full time, my husband worked full time, and we had two girls. I completed my Master’s degree while doing all this and thought I was doing life the way I was “supposed” to do it. Working in an office job, with my degree hanging on the wall, being a mom and wife, and then what I thought my life would always look like changed and, while at the moment I thought I would never recover, I could not be more thankful for those hard, windy roads I had to walk down. I’m extremely grateful for all my successes and failures. I would not be who I am today or where I am today without them. I have worked hard to maintain my mental and physical health while being a single-parent household to two very busy girls and continuing to grow my business and my name in the real estate industry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the face behind the Home Loan by Heather Mortgage Team. As a licensed mortgage loan originator, I help first-time homeowners, single parents, families moving from out of state, investors, and anyone buying homes. I have been so blessed to have a friend (who also worked in that higher education past life with me, that also found herself in real estate) create a name for herself and a team that continues to choose me to help with their financing needs. Thru that connection, I have found the niche of real estate investing and helping investors, both first and full-timers, with financing their investments. While I love helping investors, helping first-time homebuyers achieve homeownership when they did not see how it was possible is truly amazing! It’s just as awesome helping a first-time homebuyer as helping someone cash out on their 20th investment property to help fund their next one(s). Every transaction is a new adventure, and every client is a new challenge, and I love it.
I’m most proud of figuring it out and staying genuine and honest. I will be the first to say that I do not know it all (or do I have it all figured out), nor would I ever claim to, but I will figure it out. I love a new challenge, so learning new loan programs, new ways to make things work, and different ideas to help clients think out of the box to make deals happen is exciting! What you see is what you get with me, and I’m proud of that too. I think honesty and communication are the most important parts of the business. While my option may not be the best, being honest and genuine about processes, why things have to go the way they do, etc., helps me maintain those relationships and the client base I’ve worked hard to gain.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
As I said, what you see is what you get with me. I’m a pretty open book. I have no desire to maintain more than one persona, so work Heather, and outside of work, Heather is the same. I laugh a lot, cuss more than I should, and am overly passionate about most things. I’m sure many people do not know about me, but that’s just because they haven’t asked because I’ll tell you about anything you want to know! Oh! My first job was at a Sonic carhop that roller skated; maybe I rollerbladed?! I can’t remember that far back, but I wonder if many people know that. I also still have a blankie. Yes, as a woman in her late 30s, I still sleep with my baby blankie and am not too scared to share.
