Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Musick.
Hi Heather, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Back in 2018, I went through a big life reset. Coming out of that, I knew I wanted a career that gave me both independence and purpose. I’ve always loved numbers and solving problems, and mortgages ended up being the perfect fit. I got licensed in 2019 and started from scratch essentially, learning the ins and outs of the business and working hard to build trust with clients and agents.
What started as just a job quickly turned into something I’m passionate about. Helping people buy their first home, move into their next chapter, or invest in real estate isn’t just about a loan or a number—it’s about helping them create stability and options for their future. Along the way, I’ve built my brand, Home Loan by Heather, on honesty and directness. I tell people the truth, even if it means pointing them somewhere else or telling them what they do not want to hear. That’s what’s kept me grounded and what’s carried me from starting over to running a business I truly love today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
HA! It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most people who start in this industry, I had to figure things out the hard way. Building a business from scratch while raising two kids as a single mom came with plenty of long nights, early mornings, and moments of doubt. At the same time, the mortgage world itself is unpredictable—rates swing, programs change overnight, and the market can shift on a dime. You have to constantly adjust, learn, and stay two steps ahead.
There were times I felt like I was climbing uphill with no roadmap. But those struggles shaped how I work today. They pushed me to get systems in place, to stay disciplined, and to trust that consistent effort pays off. They also gave me perspective—when clients are stressed about making big financial decisions, I know exactly what it feels like to juggle pressure and uncertainty.
Looking back, the obstacles are what gave me grit. They forced me to build a business that’s not only sustainable, but also centered on honesty, adaptability, and truly helping people through one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.
As you know, we’re big fans of Home Loan by Heather. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is Home Loan by Heather, and at the core, I’m here to make the mortgage process simple, honest, and stress-free. I specialize in a wide range of loans—everything from first-time homebuyers and families upsizing or downsizing, to investors using DSCR, fix and flip, and other non-traditional loan programs. What I’m most known for is being direct and transparent. I’ll never push a loan that doesn’t fit, and if someone else has a better option, I’ll tell my clients to take it. That honesty has built my reputation and a lot of trust over the years.
What sets me apart is that I treat every loan like it’s my own. Numbers matter, but so does listening to what people really need in their next chapter. Buying a home or making an investment can feel overwhelming, and my job is to break it down, explain the options, and find the best fit for their goals.
Brand-wise, I’m proud that Home Loan by Heather reflects exactly who I am—no gimmicks, no fluff, just straight talk and solutions. At the end of the day, I want people to know that when they work with me, they’re getting someone who’s fully invested in their success and who will go the extra mile to get the deal done right.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve been fortunate to have strong mentors and supporters since the very beginning. Early on, I worked under a loan officer, Robert Hastings, who gave me my first real introduction to the business and helped me learn the ropes, more like forced me to (I really can’t thank him enough for forcing me to read guidelines to learn). When I was ready to go out on my own I joined Joe Flanner’s team where I’ve been encouraged to grow as my own business while still having guidance and support when I need it, and constantly being reminded to ‘do better.’ That balance of freedom and accountability has been a big part of my success.
At home, my support system is just as important. My fiancé steps in when I need to work late, covers for the kids, handles dinner and chores, and makes it possible for me to keep moving forward without losing balance. And the girls understand sometimes mom needs to take this call so be quiet in the car, or eating pizza for dinner so mom can finish up work for the day is okay too. They truly do all support me so well!
I’ve also been lucky to have a best friend, Mindy Templeton, in real estate who has guided me through the investment side of the business. She’s been both a personal and professional sounding board, and the knowledge she’s shared has made me a stronger loan officer for my investor clients.
Having that mix of mentors, family, and friends has been the foundation that allows me to keep growing and doing what I love.
