Meet Hanan Kathy Gaumer, MD of Regain Functional Medicine + Aesthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanan Kathy Gaumer, MD.

Hi Dr. Gaumer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Cairo, Egypt, and immigrated to the US with my parents in the ’70s. I was the child of 2 physicians, so naturally, I became a doctor. I attended KU for my undergraduate degree in cellular biology, graduating in 1987, and then went on to KU Medical School, graduating in 1991. I traveled to Wichita, KS, to complete my OB/GYN residency program at Wesley Medical Center and graduated in 1995. That is also where I met my husband, Doug! I had a private OB/GYN practice in Lawrence, KS, for 16 years, and we raised our 2 kids there. I left my practice in 2011 to become an OB/GYN Hospitalist at Advent Health Shawnee Mission Hospital. I also opened and became the Medical Director of a Medical Spa in Lawrence. Once our kids were grown, my husband and I moved to Kansas City and now live in the Village of Loch Lloyd.

Together with my 2 business partners, we opened a Functional Medicine Practice, Regain Functional Medicine, in 2015, focusing on bioidentical hormone replacement for women and Testosterone replacement for men. We also do IV and intimate health treatments for men and women using PRP, Viveve vaginal rejuvenation, and PRP hair restoration. In March 2021, we opened the esthetics part of our practice, Regain Aesthetics, a full-service Medical Spa offering state-of-the-art laser treatments, radiofrequency microneedling, Physiq body contouring, Hydrofacials, neuromodulators, dermal fillers, and cosmeceutical skin care products. We are now Regain Functional Medicine + Aesthetics. We have offices in both Leawood and Lawrence, KS.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
I originally owned a Medical Spa with 2 other partners in Lawrence, Ks. that ended badly, resulting in my selling my portion of the business. We have also had plenty of issues with employee turnover requiring time away from the business to train new hires. And then there was Covid, of course! It was only sometimes a smooth road.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Regain Functional Medicine + Aesthetics provides customized treatment plans for each patient. Whether those treatments involve testosterone, hormone replacement, or aesthetic treatments, all are oriented to a patient’s specific needs. Our objective is to affect health and well-being so that our patients feel better, function better, and look better! Our treatments are life-changing as our philosophy is to restore function to the body. Our mission is Transformation.

What sets us apart from our competitors is that our medical providers are highly well-trained in hormone therapy and listen to our patient’s symptoms. From there, they can derive a treatment formula explicitly designed for them. We can resolve unwanted symptoms, in most cases, within 6 weeks. Some offices utilize a “one size fits all” approach or only base it on a patient’s age, height, and weight. Because of that, they cannot truly address the possible side effects or problems that may come up during treatment.

On our aesthetic side, we are the only office in the Kansas City area with the Motus AZ laser platform that performs painless laser hair removal, treatment of sun damage and vascularity, and a BETTER BBL, all without discomfort to the patient. We are also the only certified Vampire Facial and Vampire Facelift providers in this area. We employ RNs and Nurse practitioners as esthetic nurse injectors doing Botox/Dysport and Dermal Fillers treatments. We are dedicated to the continued training of our staff and regularly have national trainers come in from across the country to work with our staff. Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
If you find something that you are passionate about, follow that dream. Seeing your business grow and prosper is worth all the time and hard work. If you go into business with others, ensure they are just as invested in the business’s success as you are and that everyone has some “skin in the game!” Know your strengths and weaknesses. For those areas you need to improve, look for resources to help you. College students need projects to work on, online resources, partnering with other small businesses to share expenses, etc. Working with other small businesses to promote each other’s products or services is an easy way to increase social media presence for everyone.
