Meet Essence Mallory of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Essence Mallory.

Hi Essence , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am an Editorial Braid Artist with a degree in Fashion Studies with an emphasis on marketing from Kansas State University. My journey with hair began my freshman year of college. Prior to that I had the privilege of having a mom as a hairstylist my entire life so I never had to worry about my hair. Fast forward to going to school, I now in a way felt led to learn about my textured hair. Which then segued into my journey of accepting clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This road of being an entrepreneur hasn’t been easy. I had to adapt a money mindset meaning that I had to think for my future self and not just for right now. A lot of times in my industry we have a “spend it get it right back” mentality because thats our reality. However, you have to account for cancellations, emergencies, etc. Another challenge was building clientele after college from scratch and the best marketing tool I’ve seen has been word of mouth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am starting to become known for my avant-garde hairstyles. I’ve created words out of braids or extra large crowns from loc hair. With my first love being fashion, I love being able to take what I know from that passion and working it into my love for hair. I am most proud of the connections I’ve made and continue to make from collaborating or being hired to do cool shoots. Kansas City is so slept on. I admire Bri designer of Amusemixx, Chadwick photographer and studio owner (wreckedcreation), Terry and Manuela Autre Agency, Scooter (THE BEST MALE MODEL), Syd, Jada hester fire photographer, Luz my baby (amazing photographer), Amir Abdul film photographer and my sweet husband Devonte he has assisted me every shoot. Spoke life into me when I didn’t feel adequate. I know I missed so many people but know I love and see you all.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice is to always pray. Thats the first step I take in every endeavor. Always have discernment with who you seek to learn from. Everyone doesn’t want to see you move further in your gifts but the one(s) thats meant for you will do what it takes to push/propel you to that next level.
