Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Cozette Fetterolf.
Hi Emma, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was born in Liberal, KS January 1997. We moved to KC with my family in 1999. My father is a hairstylist and my mother is a true fashionista and beauty enthusiast. My brother, Simon Jackson, 7 years my elder, owner of Herringbone Barber Shop, followed in my father’s footsteps to do hair. In 2010 my father Jerry Jackson opened up the first Paisley and Stripe Salon. Today he owns 3 locations spanning the metro area.
I was never going to follow my father and brother in doing hair. I was always obsessed with fashion and saw myself in London, Paris, or New York. Around my junior year in high school, I realized the logistics of me going out of state, much less the country for fashion school was out of the picture. I settled on Kansas State University’s Apparel and Textiles program.
My professor, Dr. Heller wrote her thesis on the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry. I learned in-depth and firsthand how embarrassingly depressing the inside of the fashion industry can be. I knew it wasn’t a place for my passion for fashion to thrive and decided I cared more about the art of fashion, the individualism, the way it can change how you feel. The expression. Not so much the business, buying, and manufacturing of clothing.
I decided on “art therapy” and after a semester of art and psychology, I was just drained. It was super interesting to learn about but I felt as if I was watching myself walk further and further away from who I was meant to be. I took a career finder test and it told me to be a hairstylist. Well, my father did own hair salons, my brother was doing well with it and I figured if I ended up hating it I would at least be able to help with the business/management side and continue to peruse my passion for fashion.
I started Paul Mitchell Cosmetology school in august 2016 and after day one, knew this was definitely the path for me. After one year of school, I started from the bottom assisted our top-level stylist and continued my education through the associate program at paisley and stripe. I built my clientele at our Lawrence location through the students at KU. I got married in June 2019, moved back to kc from Lawrence, and bought a home in Waldo! Luckily my KU clients had graduated and were moving to kc as well. All at the same time we opened our third and newest location in the crossroads.
Now I have a wonderful group of clients whom I love, and I am learning the business side of the salon in order to help take over as my father retires. My husband Konrad Fetterolf, lead singer of DYE punk band, recently graduated from barber school and is working with my brother at his barbershop herringbone kc! It is truly a family affair. I look forward to integrating personal styling into my business in order to offer both hair and fashion services.
At the moment I style photoshoots, do art in my house, and continue to obsess over fashion. Vintage, thrifting, estate perusing interior decors, music, old cars, and friends fill my free time!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My parents got divorced the summer between 8th and 9th grade. My father came out as gay. It was hard coming to realize my parents weren’t superheroes. It was an emotional time.
I grew up with “the perfect family” and that all crumbled. At the same time, I got to know my father for the first time in the most authentic way. My mom and I became even closer. My brother took me under his wing even stronger than before. I got away with a lot in high school and definitely sewed my wild oats. I’m grateful for it all. Along with the college struggle I previously explained.
Also, being the daughter of the owner, I am constantly swerving any hint of nepotism. I never want to feel like I didn’t work for where I am and what I have.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make blended baby lights, bold money pieces, and versatile cuts. I adore letting natural texture thrive.
I tailor each look to the persona my clients are wanting to portray. I care about the integrity of the hair. The person in my chair should feel completely comfortable communicating their wants, needs, and concerns all while being treated and transformed.
I’m known for my head massages and may just be the fastest curler in town. I express myself through my personal fashion, so you’ll be sure to see “a look” when you come in for your appointment. I know of all of the best thrifting and love to help my clients find the perfect piece they’ve been searching for.
What do you think about happiness?
I am happiest after finding a treasure while second-hand shopping. The thrill is like no other. I’m happiest when I see my client’s eyes light up when they see their final look. I’m happiest smoking pot and cuddling with my dog and hubby.
I’m the happiest traveling and exploring. I am happiest with my family and friends.
