Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilia Ivanova.
Hi Emilia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am the Head Coach of Heartland Fencing Academy, and my story began 26 years ago when I moved to Kansas from my home country of Bulgaria. As an experienced national-level fencer and Olympic coach, I brought my passion and expertise in fencing to the Kansas City area. I was invited to start a foil fencing program at a local club, and it quickly grew. Soon, our students began earning regional and national medals.
In 2006, we founded Heartland Fencing Academy, and it has been an incredible journey ever since. We have introduced the Olympic sport of fencing to thousands of students of all ages throughout the Greater Kansas City area. Today, we offer classes for all ages and skill levels, from beginners to elite competitors.
Over the years, many of our students have earned regional and national medals, become national champions, qualified for U.S. national teams, and competed at World Cups and World Championships. Many have also attended some of the best colleges and universities in the United States, competed in NCAA programs, and won Ivy League and NCAA championships. We are incredibly proud of all of our students and their accomplishments.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any organization, we have experienced challenges along with our successes. Finding and maintaining an appropriate facility for a fencing academy was a challenge, especially with the high cost of rent. Today, however, we are proud to have a state-of-the-art facility in an excellent location that serves our students and community well.
We also faced significant difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to compete for students’ attention among many popular sports in the Kansas City area.
The work requires long hours and frequent travel to tournaments across the country and internationally. It is demanding, intense, and sometimes challenging, but seeing our students grow and succeed makes it all worthwhile.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Heartland Fencing Academy, we offer fencing classes, camps, private lessons, and host fencing tournaments. We also offer team buildings, Birthday parties, school classes and etc. Our coaches specialize in both foil and épée fencing, and we provide programs for students of all ages, starting as young as four years old through adulthood.
We are known for our highly qualified and accomplished coaching staff, well-organized classes and camps, strong competitive programs, and our positive, supportive approach to working with children. We strive to create an environment where students can develop not only their fencing skills but also confidence, discipline, and sportsmanship.
I am proud that we have maintained a professional organization with national recognition for more than 20 years. Most of all, I am proud of our students and their achievements, both on and off the fencing strip. Watching them grow, succeed, and reach their goals is the most rewarding part of what we do.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I would like readers to know that fencing is an Olympic sport that has been part of every modern Olympic Games since 1896. It is a safe, exciting, and rewarding sport that teaches discipline, coordination, strategic thinking, and quick decision-making. Many people describe fencing as “physical chess” because it combines athleticism with strategy.
Fencing is also more affordable and accessible than many people realize, and it is easy to get started. I encourage anyone who is curious to give it a try—you may discover a lifelong passion.
