Meet Dylan Cruse of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Cruse.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
My interest in music comes from my dad. When I grew up, we would listen to a lot of Jimi Hendrix, and I’m actually named after Bob Dylan. He had some guitars at home that I would always mess around with, and when I made it to middle school, I started taking guitar lessons on my own. Since that point, music has been just a regular part of my life. My introduction to electronic music happened around that time as well, and I remember listening to bass music in my friend’s basement when I was a kid; in high school, I started going to raves in town. As a part of my college journey, I attended an Audio Engineering school and took a few online music production classes. I ended up stepping away from Audio Engineering to pursue a career as a producer/DJ as I was much more interested in the creative and performative aspects. I’ve mostly faced rejection, but I’m getting positive responses from promoters and record labels regarding my music, and I’m starting to book some DJ gigs at smaller clubs and venues around town as well!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While in college, I had some physical health problems that took me out of everything for about a year. I also struggled with and continue to work with some mental health problems. The music industry can be rough sometimes, but it also has some amazing people that make it all worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an electronic music producer and a DJ, which means I make songs that other people play, and I also play songs that others have made. The primary genres I work with are dubstep and house, but I like anything with many basses. I love creating combinations of pretty, melodic sounds contrasted by heavier, dirtier bass sounds. I love putting lots of variety into my DJ sets and moving the energy around while occasionally sprinkling in some of my originals.

Can you talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy?
Mostly I want everyone around me to be happy and succeed. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help and kindness of others, and I want to be able to return those favors someday.
